"At least 20 Indian soldiers have been killed in a “violent face-off” with Chinese forces along the disputed Himalayan frontier in the deadliest clash between the nuclear-armed neighbours for more than four decades.

It's currently on track to be about 3 times deadly than the flu in the first 12 months, that's without a vaccine, and we have a vaccine for the flu....so it should normalize down to about about a third of that

If and when there is a vaccine, it, just like the flu vaccine will only be 20% effective in over 65 yr olds.

We are all going to have to face that roll of the dice eventually, both with the flu, now with covid, when over 65

The thing is that California has a history that involved neoliberal ideas on tax cuts that have hampered the state governments ability to act on the debt.

California’s recent budget problems resulted from the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression. But the state’s difficulty in addressing them was as much a political crisis as a budget crisis. Since the passage of the notorious anti-tax Prop 13 in 1978, which capped property tax rates and made it nearly impossible to raise revenue through the legislature, California has been locked into a revenue structure that, outside of boom times, proves too small to finance the public services that residents desire. Several tax cuts during the late 1990s dot-com boom, and a huge $5.5 billion annual cut to the vehicle license fee passed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003, only exacerbated this imbalance. The state also had to contend with multiple veto points that allowed the minority party to control the fiscal debate.

Their figure was that around 10.5 million arrests made a year.

Really not sure what your point is here. All the lefties that I know can have an opinion on many differing subjects at the same time are you saying right wingers can’t? They for example can think statues put up to what are basically racist traitors should be brought down (and I’d say put in a museum where their context can be learnt) and at the same time be against bad police practices and the alleviation of poverty.

Also it seems a bit rich for Social Darwinist based right wingers like yourself to be talking of concern for those living in poverty when their ideas have done so much to cause it.

For me it is not a matter of black and white - Democrats or Republicans -that view seems too simple and simplistic to me.

As I have often explained both parties are split into factions and as I’ve said many times here, to me the US has two right wing parties one centre right the other further right.

There are lefties and progressives in the Democratic Party but as an entity it has traditionally been centre right and has a times embraced some neoliberal thinking. And I have been very critical of that.

Also it has to be remembered that over time and region political parties change and can change at differing rates. I mean many tradition Republicans are horrified by Trumps Republican Party and have left it to become right wing independents there are right wingers actively campaigning against Trump.

I’m down on record as saying I hope the resurgent progressive factions in the Democratic Party can pull it and the political landscape to the left because for far too long the pull has been coming from the neoliberal and even far right.

Anyway differing places might have differing policies and it’s the policies that should be looked at.

For me it isn’t just purely tribal - it’s not a case of ‘my Party right or wrong’ for me the argument has to be a made if I think it a good one I’ll give it my support if not I will be critical

Some right-wing ideas are better than others some left wing ones are better than others. I’m a leftie because on the whole left wing ideas seem to be a lot better than right wing ones AND a lot easier to defend as can be seen from this forum where right wing ideas so often fall flat on their faces.

The Politics forum has long been different than the other forums in the Hip universe with its own rules and even at times restrictions (at one time you needed to have posted 100 posts in other forums before been allowed to post in Politics)

It has also allowed a certain amount of leeway - there is a realisation that debates can be heated and a blind eye can be given BUT too often these days there are those coming to the forum that have no intention of entering into debate and others whose sole purpose seems to be to snipe at those that do and disrupt those that are taking place.

If people genuinely wish to debate they are welcome but if not and only post in Politics to spread lies and culture war propaganda they are not welcome and their posts may be deleted and if they persist in trying to be disruptive then other measures might need to be taken.
