Thanks to Wrat for bringing up an interesting question – should politicians be leaders or followers?

For example say you have a politician called Mr X that believes in democracy and equality but after canvassing the people that vote for the party he stands for finds out that they wish for a system that is less democratic and less equal does Mr X go with his conscience and resign his post or vote in line with his constituents and against the things he believes in?

Should such a politician as Mr X try and convince his constituents that they are wrong and that democracy and equality are good things to want or keep quiet and do nothing?

It was a close thing as to if Britain would fight Nazis Germany many in the UK and especially in the right wing English establishment didn’t want to declare war on Hitler they thought it would cost too much, especially economically, but on the other side there were people like Churchill, he was a right winger, and very much a part of the establishment and he didn’t mince words on how difficult it would be for the UK

“"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat". We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs—Victory in spite of all terror—Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.”

Are there leaders in the right wing republican establishment that are willing to go against the trend on the right and fight against the ideas of tyranny?

In your example one would HOPE that that rather than resign he strives to make subtle changes that reflect equality allowing him to make compromises which is what life is about.....

the gop has allowed trump to destroy what little credibility they had they certainly are not the party of Lincoln Or T.R

Sorry i thought i'd covered that with - (or) Should such a politician as Mr X try and convince his constituents that they are wrong and that democracy and equality are good things to want or keep quiet and do nothing?

I think the problem comes when it is difficult to compromise with those that refuse to even debate in any rational or reasonable way - as i've said time and again many on the right just point blank to refuse to admit they could be wrong even when they cannot defend their ideas in any ratioal way.

Thing is that the rot in the Republican party was already wide spread before Trump stood for president

I do not think they are the same thing in my example Mr X is not attempting to convince the constituents but subtly modifying and attempting to move forward its a fine line

I think we are getting into semantics here – I mean to try and change or modify someone’s views don’t you try to persuade/convince them - unless you go the car battery and jump leads route.

And I think we are getting off the point.

If you are at a rally for a political party that you support and you found yourself surrounded by people that are clearly racist or promoting obviously wacky conspiracy theories or carrying weapons and talking of bring down the duly elected government wouldn’t any rational and reasonable person begin to question why they are giving that party their support?

The rational and reasonable people have abandoned Trump, it's the irrational and unreasonable people who still support him. Problem is there are so many of them! American schools need to teach a course like Common Sense 101 so we don't get millions of people growing up to be gullible minions who love Big Brother.

The thing about the big brother regime was that only one set of facts was allowed (they might change it but it remained just one set been allowed) nobody was allowed to look up the actual facts

What has happened in the US (and UK) is that political powers have told people they don’t have to believe in facts – the facts are still there if any one of them wanted to actually look them up but they don’t because they negate the alternative reality they wish to live in and where they political leaders want to keep them.

This is not unreality been imposed on them by big brother but people consciously choosing to reject reality – the reality is still there and you can point out the reality through education but these people seem to have decided they don’t want to have any truck with reality, I’m not sure people like that can be educated out of their beliefs you might as well try and explain evolution to a creationist.

    Mr. Maccabee -
I've owned guns my entire life. I've hunted since the age of 12 (first legal age back then) and I was taught gun SAFETY from the age of 10. Neither I - or any family member - has ever even thought of committing a crime of any kind - with or without a gun. I believe in being able to defend my wife and kids - and myself - if we ever have a home invasion / rape / robbery / mugging attempt.

Given my background history, I feel NO THREAT of some gun law changes to keep guns out of the hands of mental cases and convicted violent felons. The new computer-manufactured guns made from plastics & polymers that can't be traced are just open invitations for violent people to commit more violent crimes. Does handing out alcohol and drugs to drivers with suspended licenses and histories of DUI arrests / car crashes / deaths sound like a good idea?? If not - why do we allow such "green lights" to violent felons & mentally-compromised people??? State a sensible logic to that.

I DO NOT view such sensible gun laws as an attack on my 2nd amendment rights. I DO NOT believe the federal government is going to come around and search houses to confiscate every gun. I lose NO SLEEP over it. That's BS spread by those who want to secure votes to insure their own jobs in Washington. And GULLIBLE people suck it right down and go into a PANIC. As it turns out - and has been proven in numerous instances - elected officials on both sides of the gun debate OWN GUNS for protection!!! They aren't about to enact laws that make THEM give up their guns ............... so relax!!! Both sides of the political aisle WANT GUNS to protect themselves and their families. Joe Biden said publicly he bought a shotgun for his wife to protect herself when he's away. Great defense for a household - multiple pellets in every shot - harder to miss the intruder.

Put another way ............ The likelihood of a TOTAL BAN on guns is extremely remote considering everyone's desire for protection. But the likelihood of losing our medical health insurance for millions more Americans by REPUBLICAN PARTY moves is all but certain if they get their way. Many, many employers don't compensate their employees with health insurance anymore - or they make their employees pay more & more out of their pockets, and face ever-larger deductibles to the point where people are more or less paying for all their own medical expenses. This has been a several-decades-long shift away from what used to be called "fringe benefits" in addition to what's in people's paychecks. With the LACK of pay keeping up with today's cost of living and constantly-rising healthcare - how are Americans supposed to pay for all the things being thrust on us by employers and THE REPUBLICAN PARTY those employers donate to ???????? THOSE LOSSES are a sure thing. Total ban on guns ............... NOT HAPPENING.

The Pentagon's latest robots stress stealth and silence. Up until now, nobody gave a crap about noisy electric motors and metal parts, but they want silent robots that can kill you before you know anything happened. They are just the first prototypes, but include sting rays that can swim for a year without recharging, and bats that can follow you around in the dark. The newest advances in terahertz frequencies promise the ability to cheaply and easily look through every wall in NYC simultaneously. You will get the idea eventually. All this BS is already history.

I'm more concerned about any so called assault weapons ban than what you just listed. I still disagree to certain extents on some the other things but they're not my priority because they quite honestly don't effect me. I've been mentally cleared for the job field I'm working and I've neither the interest or skill to buy and complete an 80% lower.

Understood. And of those 74,222,958 people, how many would vote for him now? Trump's base has shrunk considerably and Republicans no longer need to be afraid of it. But there will always be those who don't like the Democrats' agenda and will continue to support the Republicans as long as they get rid of Trump.

    sounds about right.

Best thing to happen to the UK since VE day. You will never convince people who are too short sighted that they only think of themselves and where they'll be next year. The good people of the UK had the balls to vote giving our next generations a prosperous future. EU will crumble within 10 years.
