... In the past few weeks we have had very little rain here in North Wales UK. The Money Saving Tip I wish to pass on is that whenever we have a shower, and my Wife and I both have two showers a day. Individually at separate times, we stand in a large yellow Tub in the shower. The shower water at each shower fills that Tub. This water is then put in the other tub there to flush the toilet. Using the precept. If its yellow let it mellow. If its brown, flush it down! The rest of the water is then taken out into the garden and put in watering cans to water the Flower Pots in the main. Doing both actions saves us money on our metered water as well, particularly as we NEVER need to flush the toilet via the cistern. Now then HIP people. Do YOU have any Money Saving Tips you can post for other members to save cash in these hard times? Go on. Post. You know you do have! Best regards Kenny (Boozercruiser). .... .......
Having no extra money that's not anything I can speak on, but I do keep a change jar, though I often have to raid it.
Thank you for posting My Special Angel Sister I alway had a change jar as well, which never did get that full due to being raided! I hope some will post tips though in respect of saving money. I could still do with some myself the way inflation is going now and the relevant hard times.
Shop at cheaper supermarkets Supermarkets such as Lidl and Aldi often offer cheaper fresh and perishable products than stores like Waitrose and Sainsburys, along with bargains on dry goods, toiletries, and homeware. Make sensible swaps Don’t be a snob when it comes to supermarkets' own brands. They are commonly made by the same manufacturer as branded goods and can save you several pounds per shop. Combat world waste & eat well with a reduced-price food app Revolutionary food apps are bringing both cheaper food and a better planet to fruition by inviting you to pay a small amount of money for food boxes containing food that would otherwise be thrown out. Rather than turning to your treasured takeaway or paying for expensive meals out, you could be doing both your wallet and the planet a favour. Check the reduced section Another great way to reduce food waste and cut back on your shopping bill is to check out your supermarket’s reduced section for your essentials. It may also be that something has been damaged in store (e.g. a washing powder box) and is therefore available at a reduced price.
Start a garden. I also save plastic bags, zip lock bags, metal twist fasteners, nuts, bolts, washers, etc, (I pick them up in parking lots often), cook our own food, shop Aldi's and bargain groceries first, visit used book stores and Good Will type stores, fix everything I can possibly fix myself, don't buy bottled water, have never been in a Starbucks, etc.
I do like that backlight mirror, boozer. I do my own repairs, sometimes being cheap and mechanically/electronically inclined is a blessing and a curse....
I already do something similar, and have for years. I have a bucket in the shower that I use to collect shower water. I use it to flush. I also do this with rain water that I collect into a barrel. Can't drink it these days, but when you flush the john with a bucketful of nature's bounty, the actual drinkable water from your tap gets consumed less. Also in my bag of tricks: - Take a piss outside anytime you can. Saves the need to flush. This is mostly for the gentlemen, who have the correct plumbing to do this. Benefits of rural living. - Take advantage of public restrooms any time you can. Somebody else pays when you flush there. If you have a dire situation with funds, it might occasionally be okay to "borrow" a roll of toilet paper. I used to do this as a broke student years ago. - Collect bottle deposits. That empty beer can is still worth something, even after you consume the contents. - Places like night clubs, restaurants and expos might offer complimentary free matches and pens. Stock up. - Ride your bicycle, if you own one. It's nuts to drive a mere mile or two with your car just to go do something with these gas prices. - Buy retired business laptops like Fujitsu Lifebooks or Lenovo Thinkpads or HP Probooks for your computing needs. For the non-gamers out there, you'll only pay a fraction of the price you'd pay for a comparable new device, and they're usually better built too. Their service life can be considerably extended with light weight Linux distros, like Puppy.
Try changing your clothes less often You could always try restricting yourself to less clothes to save on the costs of running the washing machine. Take this one with a grain of salt it is important to have clean clothes. Wait 24 hours before you buy Before you buy something expensive wait 24 hours and think about it. Or 30 days or a week, however I'd long enough Keep track of when stores are having a sale Wait until the stuff you want goes on sale Turn out the lights. Most people are really bad about this. Keep the lights off if you can, especially when you leave a room. Minimize your AC and heating use Try to not just leave the AC blasting in the summer so it feels like the inside of your house is an arctic region. Or a sauna in the middle of winter. Keep things comfortable but save the electricity if you can. Get an old fashioned lawn mower. It actually disturbs me how much gasoline is used to cut grass. There have got to be some 21st century designs on these old lawn mowers
I buy recertified computers - they're just usually a large corporation's that has just gone off lease - they work for everyday and regular office work for a fraction of the new price. Usually they're not even worth fixing. Tiger direct is my usually place to buy.
Thank youTwo. There was the original lighted Mirror there Two but took that one down a year ago and installed that mirror instead. I had some fiddling to do but the electrics where there. So drilled holes for some new holding plates, and I managed all that without blowing myself up! Sod getting someone in to do it. I was quoted £100 over the phone for fitting. Bugger that I thought. I even used a spirit level so it was straight. I spent the £100 saved restocking my beers!
Oh and try taking your drinks without ice. All that energy that is used to freeze water is excessive.
Thank you for your very interesting post Desos. Temperatures here in the Ukrainian generally don’t justify AC. I understand that they can use more electricity than heating bars and other forms of heating. With the cost of energy going through the roof here in the uk sod that for a game of soldiers! One thing I have done is get rid of all incandescent bulbs and installed LED instead. My smart meter tells me that the cost difference is huge !
My biggest saving is this. Here in the UK bus travel is free for Pensioners. Wifey and I travel a lot using our bus passes. Saves a fortune. Plus of course when using the bus one is not using home heating or lighting or hardly any energy.
there are only two reasons to buy anything. one is those things you need to survive that aren't legitimately free. the other is only if you are going to actually enjoy using, or enjoy what you make or access with it. anything else is almost certain to dissapoint.
Shower At Someone else's Place I think this is one of the more unusual ways to save money but can be very helpful. Some gyms are laid out so you can walk straight through to the changing rooms (with showers) without paying or checking in. Don’t Die – Funerals Are Expensive This one is a little morbid but you have to admit it’s funny. You will save money on funerals by not dying! It might sound silly but think about the cost of flowers and food alone for your funeral – that can be really expensive even if only a few people attend.
That has got to be the biggest waste of money - the death industry. After my last breath (and subsequent posthumous fart) I'm going to the slab at the local medical school to be sliced up for science. Years from now, some sweet young blonde co-ed pre-med student will slide the sheet back on me in the anatomy lab - gasping and shocked - and she will exclaim.... "look at the size of that man's.................................................brain...."
