  1. As said before the inland flights start from Palam airport..
this used to be the international arrival airport once..
best domestic airlines are nowadays Sahara air and Jet Airways..
Deccan en Jagson are newcomers..the old timer Indian airlines
still is a market..but the competition race is very sincere...
flying within India is not bad..it's quick...and if you know where
you wanna go..it's not so bad either..saves time..but not money..
I'll give you peeps some websites about domestic airlines..

    www.jetairways.com
    www.indian-airlines.nic.in

I bet you will find your pick in these flights..
I flew with Jet Airways..Sahara Air..and Indian Airlines..
    Tiger
  2. Well..during my Indian trips..I took some train rides..
    it's a big adventure..be prepared for hassles..adventures..
first have a peep at this information site..it will tell you a bit..
what Indian railways is about..it's a huge network...real huge..
    http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/
to be able to travell in trains..you need a ticket..now..
in a country like India..getting that reservation..takes time..
patience..and first..you have to make a choice about the class..
there are express trains=quick..there are mail trains=less quick..
and there are passengers trains=very slow..but you will love it..
I took all 3 of these types of trains..now..reservation..oh...
in early 70's..I met another Belgian by chance..
it's in my journal somewhere..I bet it was in Agra..we travelled..
    together by train..without a ticket..we just took a train...and..
when the conductor came..we were just put out of the train..
that's all..in these days..it was a hassle to get any reservation..
long waiting rows on the reservation counters...
no computers, you know..now..it takes 2 minutes to book a seat..
some trains..like the Shatabdi Express..need special reservation..
I always found it a big hassle to get a reservation..it's very confusing..
keep your cool..even if you got a reservation..well..even then??
you will have to find the right boogie..your seat..your sleeping berth..
be extra careful for theft..pickpockets in India profit from the confusion..
take a little chain+padlock with you..so..you can chain your luggage..
I've known a case..where an Indian in my compartiment..woke up..
from his upper berth...and his shoes..were stolen at night..
there are a few considerations about classes in trains.. confusing??
    1/AC first class=bit of a luxury..very expensive..
    2/First class without airco=comfortable..
    3/Chair car=second class with airco...
    4/Sleeper without airco=I took this one a lot..it's O.K.
    5/General class=big hassle..overcrowded..but the real India..
I can tell you stories about these trains..
    6/without reservation=risky..in the 70's..lenient towards foreigners..
no fines..sadhu's etc..never get a ticket..they are put out of trains
    daily...I believe nowadays..if you travell black..you'll be fined..booh..
Indian trains are mostly not so punctual...you're in India..
be patient,peeps...a good advice..If you got a problem..
ask for the TTE=ticket inspector...usually friendly to foreigners..
ask for the foreigner quota in railway stations=this is a service..
mostly in train stations with computer systems=even then...
if you really face a problem anywhere..poke the station master...
and if he's not helpfull..tell him..you will make a complaint..
to the folks on top of him..India is 1 big bureaucraty, you know??
Indian railway stations are HECTIC..there are LOTS of peeps.
keep your cool..eating..no problem..buffet=for little snacks..
a cup of Indian chai(tea)refresh yourself in the waiting rooms
first class..I always took a shower in there..in the refreshment
room of any station=always good for toast/eggs=morning breakfast..
left luggage=they call it cloakroom in India..not bad..
don't huff and puff around in the Indian heat..leave your luggage..
I do wish you a happy train journey...if you ever make it to India...

    crazy Tiger...

  3. Concerning middle range hotels..can't give much advice..
I stayed once in Ambassador hotel in 1980..not bad..
but usually..you will spend quite a bit of money/night..
New Delhi=I would advise to find out hotels in the Paharganj area..
the road is called Main Bazar..it's full of hotels..restaurants etc...
around Connaught Place..you could try Ringo Guest house..
    adress=Scindia House 17..ask for Connaught Lane..cheap..
if you want better class hotel..choice enough in Delhi..
    try Kanishka=Ashoka Road=expensive..
I had a delay of 24 hours from Delhi to Paris Charles de Gaulle..
plane out of order??what the fuck..they put me up in Hyatt Regency..
it's amusing to see these yuppie youths..oh well..why not??
behaving like children or giggling teenagers..in the Djinns nightclub..
I bet they were spending the money from their hard working parents??
    http://delhi.regency.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp
    http://travel.dcealumni.com/15/discotheques-in-delhi/
    super de luxe..not crazy Tiger's style...ahah..
oh...note down the adress of your Embassie..it will be in Chanakyapuri..
some useful adresses for flying within India are the following..
    1/Jet Airways=Connaught Circus N40
    2/Sahara Airlines=Connaught Circus N41..
    3/Air Deccan=a fairly new service..check www.airdeccan.net
    4/Indian Airlines=the good old timer=on Janpath=Malhotra Building..
also ask the adress of the airline you fly with...and whether you need
re confirmation or not..don't forget to save some roepies..
for departure tax=it was about 750 roepies while I last flew..
I hope you will NEVER need this following adress..
if you get ill=go to Apollo Hospital=Sarita Vihar=Mathura Road..
    pharmacies=go to Nath=block G=Connaught Place 2..
    that's all for this time,peeps..
    Tiger

  4. I never liked luxury hotels..first..I did not have the bucks..
    secondly..I don't have a face for these hotels...bwahah..no..
I would recommend you future Indian travellers peeps..to take
some middle class accomodation..I'll give adresses for Delhi in
    next posting..first..budget sleeping for Delhi..
top of the bill is free accomodation=go to Old Delhi Gurdwara..
a Gurdwara is a Sikh temple or ashram..you can get free board
and lodging..adress=very close to Chandni Chowk=ask for Sis Ganj..
there are about 400 rooms..free..always open..just try it out..
secondly..Tibetan refugee camp..in the same area of Gurdwara..
ask for Majnu ka Tila=in Old Delhi as well..quite cheap..restaurant,
    lockers for luggage,showers etc...available...Tibetan culture..
thirdly..try any budget adress in Paharganj=just get into any hotel
and ask for prices..check the room first...there is lots of choice..
fourth option=the railway retiring room of Old delhi railway Station..
you will need a valid train onward ticket..very noisy..I slept there
once...I was tired..so..i did not hear that noise...bwahah...
fifht option is the Youth hostel in New Delhi..stayed there once..
very cheap..very good area in the embassies regio of Chanakyapura..
adress=Nyaya Marg 5.. website of Youth hostels India..check it out..
www.yhaindia.org I took a double room..damn noisy because of the
ventilator of the water cooler..good breakfast..take transport..
    open 24h/24h..a good adress...maybe you'll need a membership card??
take that in your own country..always cheap accomodation..
sixt option=retiring rooms of the airports..not easy to get,I believe??
use this option if you need to take an early departure return flight??
I'll get you peeps some middle class range adresses for Delhi later..
    crazy Tiger..
  5. so..suppose you booked a flight to New Delhi..
arrival in India..when they open that airplane door..
you will feel the hot air..it's the climate, you know..
most flights towards Delhi have one disadvantage..
they arrive in the middle of the night..in my opinion..
best bet is that you book a hotel from your own country..
that way this hotel will send you a driver who picks you up
at the airport...listen..reaching Delhi airport can be a big
    confusion..the crowds..touts..anything..first you'll go through
the customs and passport control..you'll get an entry stamp..
then change some money..there are banks in the arrival hall..
I bet they are always open..you can get a prepaid taxi ride..
    you give your destination..hotel A or Z..
the boot will make you a ticket..you go out of the airport..
and pick a cab..they will cash their money with that ticket..
give them that ticket ONLY on reaching your destination in Delhi..
watch out for scams..these taxi's are usually 2 guys..
not very safe in the middle of the night..sometimes they will try
to get extra money..all kind of things they will invent..
road blocked..detours..hotel closed..in my honest opinion..
stay at the arrival hall until it's light..unless..someone reliable..
from a hotel booked in advance..picks you up..
by their own transport..you all know these folks standing at the
arrival halls of airport with a signboard..mr.A..or mr.Z..
so..suppose you reach Delhi..got into your hotel..
have a good breakfast..get your jetlag bit out of your system..
ready to attack New Delhi???first thing I should recommend..
go to the official Indian tourist office..ask a map of Delhi(free)
    adress=Janpath 88..open monday to friday between 09 a.m..
to 6 p.m..very friendly and helpfull staff..ask them anything..
on saturdays open from 09.am to 2 p.m. closed on sundays..
their website should be www.incredibleindia.org or another
one www.indiatourism.com they can also book accomodation..
but in my opinion not the budget ones??so..then..
just make a stroll along Janpath..it's close to Connaught Place..
on Janpath you will find a Tibetan market with lots of little stalls..
if you wanna have a cup of tea in style..go to Imperial hotel..
on Janpath.. website www.theimperialindia.com it's not a place
to stay for budget accomodation..I had a cup of tea there once..
it's worthwhile..you'll sniff the luxury of the British Raj..
believe me..you will be AMAZED of some luxury hotels in India...
I'll give more info on Delhi in next posting...
    crazy Tiger
