we think that marijuana may impair long-term potentiation in the hippocampus and nearby cells within the brain. this would explain the mild memory and learning impairment associated with habitual marijuana use. it is not clear whether it actually kills brain cells - though it probably does not - but it definitely has an impact on the creation of new cells within the hippocampus. additionally, it may also have some effects on inter-cellular connections. it definitely seems to weaken LTP, which is the proces by which the connections between neurons strengthen, or weaken (by LTD - long-term depression). that being said, marijuana seems to at least alter the functionality and/or efficiency of the hippocampus and nearby structures. any stoner can see that his/her short term memory is impaired at least somewhat and they may also notice differences in learning and concentration. now these differences are not normally so extreme that it inhibits an intelligent user from succeeded in an academic environment, but marijuana definitely does not aid in the cellular process that is learning and memory. peace.
