Anything by Enid Blyton.. but especially her Mallory Towers and The Naughtiest Girl books. You could say that Rowling's Harry Potter is really Mallory Towers with a magical twist . Someone's mentioned Narnia.. there were great.. until I grew up and understood all the Christian allegories going on.. then it put me off.. but read it for the story and language and it's wonderful stuff. There's K LeGuin's Earthsea Trilogy.. written for kids and winner of numerous kid awards but underpinned throughout by Taoist concepts of balance. Something all adults can read and apply to the way we live life. And finally (and not least) there's Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising Pentalogy for her classic reworking of the Arthurian legend. Actually.. come to think of it.. u could probably throw David Edding's in here. His Belgariad and Malloreon quintets are easy to read and have a cracking story of good vs evil.
lol from about the age of 5 upwards to about 10 i loved black beauty and rohl dahl stuff...and all the ickle penguin classics like the princess and the pea. and i distinctly remember books with characters that were vegetables...i can't for the life of me remember what it was called though

If you give a mouse a cookie - Laura Numeroff The Balloon Tree - Phoebe Gilman (both i loved and still do)
The earliest book I can really remember enjoying was "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", which was a cardboard book for small children, and was probably the first book I read myself. At primary school I really enjoyed "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh", and was very pleased when we had to read it in class a few years later, although I though the animated film was pretty rubbish. The other books that stand out are "The Worst Witch" series by Jill Murphy, which were probably my favorite out of the lot, and I was really pleased when they made a great TV series based on them a few years ago.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I love that book. For some reason I always got really hungry on the page with the plums. When I was younger my favourite book was The Secret Garden. I've always loved it.
In retrospect I think that Charlotte's Web br E.B.White was my favourite children's book.If I remember the spider was a mentor to a runt piglet. It was that meaningful one to one personal relationship that is so important in life.In the end the spider dies after laying eggs, the new spiders get blown away to start new life cycles of their own.

My all time favorite children's book when I was younger would have to be The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
