Wolves. Ever since I was child I had a huge connection to them, and I used to actually howl at the moon until I was seven. An unusual child I was... I also have a connection to owls.
i feel like i would be a bird.. but i've always been drawn to wolves as well. i feel like i would be a bird, more though.
mine found me, and that's what makes me think they are real, even though i wasn't doing anything special to go looking for them.
at one point in time a mocking bird was following me and watching me. It was odd, sometimes i would want him to go away other times i would be okay with the thing sitting on a branch chirping. i never really delved into the idea of that mocking bird untill now. in art class in school we were told to make totem animals, i made a snake. do these animals always come to me or can i call on a random animal for help, like a bear for strength?

In my culture you have 7 spirit guides one of which is your primary or dominant totem this is the one who will be with you constantly. We also believe that you should keep a piece of this animal with you at all times to represent a closer connection to him or her. For example if my guide is the Bear I will constantly keep bear claws on me. Sorry if your guide is a bird of prey due to laws you arnt allowed to posess feathers or talons from these birds this is what happens when people shoot for sport.
is animal totem the same as power animal? if so, mine is a ptereosaur... he helped me get over rage...
I never really connected with the idea of a totem animal for whatever reason until I did a mediation I found in "Sorgitzak" by Veronica Cummer. I usually am terrible with mediation because I can't seem to relax properly or slow my mind down but this one was different for whatever reason. When I did the meditation the "animal" that popped up was a moth. I was a little pissed because a moth didn't seem all that "cool." However, I started researching the symbolism of the moth and the moth in folk tales, etc and I found myself becoming really connected with it. The moth then started showing up a lot in my life after that. There is a woman who lives in my area and teaches various course on Shamanism and has even written a book (she seems too new agey for me however...not that there is anything wrong with that...just not what I am in to for the most part) that told me one of my totems is a Dolphin. Not so sure about that but I thought it was interesting that she seemed to see that in me. :]
well for me its a little different, because i met mine for the first time, when i wasn't even thinking about looking for them, let alone having done anything to do so. i was also quite young and hadn't done anything particularly that i am aware of, to purify myself, nor was i particularly hungry, nor alone, except in the sense of being by my self in my mind. but then i did grow up in kind of semi-wilderness places and these were home to me.
Do you ALWAYS misspell animal as anmial? This is a REALLY interesting thread, but the constant "anmial" is sooo distracting. Sorry.
