You know, the original hippies of the '60s were called "freaks." They embraced the nickname; the fact that they were all social misfits unified them. Arlo Guthrie proclaimed the following at Woodstock: "There's supposed to be a million and a half people here tonight. New York State Throughway is closed, man! Lotta freaks!"

It's hard to be a deviant in the complex social strata that is high school in contemporary U.S. culture. But trust me, as difficult as it may be, staying true to your own heart will always be more rewarding than conforming.

you all rock!! I love you all!

"White collar conservative flashin down the street, pointing that plastic finger at me, they all assume my kind will drop and die, but I'm gonna wave my freak flag high."-Jimi Hendrix

Don't worry just wave your freak flag high, man. [IMG] I'm a 'freak' at my school too, oh well better then being ordinary! and i'm happy so happy and thats all that matters and if people are happy too then i'm happy. free yourself from what people expect of you, be yourself!

    peace and love

"you all say freak like it is a bad thing."
    -Tie Dye Paul

here's some history and a lesson in controlling language (like the ******/bitch debate today)
freak comes to us through the concepts of freak of nature and the freak (of nature) show (sideshows). Negative connotation.
then in the 20th c, it evolved into a positive connotation associated with interests: a roller skating freak, or an acid freak.
hippies tended to use the term for themselves, derived from drug freak. even when they were not more than social users at best.
echoes of this are the current use of 60-70s spun jesus freak.

so control that language and say thank you when called a freak.

Quick tip: when people yell "hey hippie! do any drugs lately?" go "yeah. wanna buy some?"
Shuts all the DARE/whitebread/conservative/KKK/neo-nazi/fascist/ad infinitum wankers up.
