Or some people have a sense of humor abount being called a hippie (ie: me). stereotypes are silly, so why not poke fun at yourself? (goddam treehuggers...cut your damn hair hehehe...)

i mean, naturally, if you are an activist, or want to help the environment, or wear hemp, or simply have dreads, you will more than likely be labelled hippie. and so what? it is a label. they are everywhere. and until you can get to know every single person on this planet, we will continue to use labels. (and not everyone that is labelled lets go of their personality to fit that label)

now, my friends, this is a silly and crazy arguement. it is pointless. labels are here. like it, or not. you can choose to make light of them, or bust your brain trying to make them go away. the choice is yours.

Yes, but... laughing at yourself for being an idiot, is yet again, rather sad.

One does not need to break one's head to drop labels... one just doesn't use one...belive me, it's not so hard... try it!

how is making light of something that shouldn't be taken seriously being an idiot? and just because one drops labels does not mean that they are *poof* gone. like i said, labels are silly. and people that take calling themsleves a hippie/punk/metalhead/goth etc too seriously, are also silly. the key is to not live your life by the brand you are given. and yes, make fun of it all you like.

peace and love and all things good,

when you put it that way... then true, you're right... I agree.

Yet making too much fun of it on your own account is also, indeed...silly.

 Oh here we go, like we haven't had this stupid label argument a million times over then given up.
    Just fuck it.

Anyway the movement... I'm not sure it's dead, just ran out of steam (damn 80's) and is laid low.
It seems like everything is swinging back the other way. Iraq being the new Vietnam and such.
Maybe our time will come again, but we'll need to get a grip, step away from the net, and seize the day. :)

There are still hippys around, can't think of any locations of the top of my head, but they are knocking around. Check out the communal living forum.

hehe...it's also my email ;). dirty hippie is kind of a nickname my weirdo friends have dubbed me ("ew! gross! hippie germs!"). needless to say, this arguement is done. and of course i am right, i'm always right (again, don't take anything to heart kiddies).

but back to the origonal topic.

we should start a hippie commune on an island somewhere. that would be fun. wouldn't it? yes, it would.

one could say that over 400 posts a month on a single message board is also quite silly.

perhaps making generalization of people who you deem to generalize is ALSO...quite silly?

perhaps you havent realised that a name is only a name, and that things are only identical on an atomic level...so from now on, to avoid these generilizations that you hate, i want you to to have a new name for EVERY SINLGE THING YOU SEE. all breaths of air are comprised of different portions of different things, yet i bet you call it all air...each plank of wood is differnt and unique (even from the same tree)...so i want you to come up with a new name for every one. this samosa is not identical to that somosa, so surely they must not both be somosas...this glass of water contains .3 percent more oxygen than the one before it, so how ignorant of us to generalize and call both glasses, glasses of water...

hippie is only a name used to indentify a certain thing, or a group of certain things....get off your high horse and get over it.

Why do yall say PEACE and LOVE is dead...geez not just "hippys" beleive in PEACE and LOVE...you didnt have to be a hippy to believe in PEACE and LOVE...those are just things that people whant and fight for every day...if your saying that they live in PEACE and LOVE back in the 60's then your wrong..because they had the Vietnam war...or your saying that people belive in war and hate nowadays...i dont know and i dont really care if you understand what i said but geez if they whant to be "hippys" let them be...dont judge them... your treating a way of life like if it was last summers shoes...

And Lennon is dead but his music and beleives will always be alive...

i would not consider myself weak, OR a fool, in the least bit, and i don't think people who really know me would either.

i am in no way letting go of either my personality or individuality by calling myself hip man.... cmon now. thats what being HIP is about, it is realizing that there is no one road to enlightenment, there are countless ones, and it is about figuring which one is right for YOU. there are no RULES to being a hippy, unlike most 'generalizations'

people are more alike than different...

    take it EZ man

I'm not into following labels seriously, but they're fun to throw around lightly.

A little silliness doesn't hurt man, it's called havin' a sense of humor.

that's what i've been trying to say! i mean, the world is serious enough as it is...so find humor and fun and silliness anywhere you can. and yes. even at the expense at *gasp* labels ;).

Well, if you think more into it, you're wrong.

If one does want to laugh at oneself, then one should laugh at his own personality, and not as some stereotypical label one posseses.

There are different names for everything, hippie.

Yet I choose not to use them...

but, while different types of wood do not try to fit into the generalization of "wood"... to make thier life "easier"...

    hippies do...

    Good.

But do know, when you introduce yourself...

"Hey man, my name is _____ and i'm a hippy"..... you are instantly stereotyping yourself...

Society has a different image of "hippy" than any of you do.

that is true, every persons image of hippy will probably differ, but you do have the ability to change it while you are with them, for better or worse.

Yes, but why worry about changing the segnificance of a label, when you can spend your time doing something more productive, like improving yourself as a person.

Society is in general, religiously dominant and concervative. They see "hippies" as drug doing lazy ass fuckers...

Hell, do you want people to see you that way?

The people that know you well, wil lsee the real you, that's true, but, labeling yourself as a "hippy" will make your worklife, schoollife, and social life worse... because people are dumb enough to stereotype you... just by some silly label.

Maybe I do laugh at my personality (i AM pretty fucking funny ;)) and i don't believe i ever said that i WAS a hippie, just that i am called one.

regardless, this arguement is getting so, so repetitive. and has probably taken place 4096204895290385 times. i say, let's all agree to disagree (except, of course, for those who actually agree.)

Same here, I don't run around introducing myself as a hippy and screaming "I"M A HIPPIEEEEEE!!!! PEACE AND LOVE GODDAMMIT!!" I just often end up being called one, because for instance I have a pretty laid-back personality, smoke pot, and follow classic rock religiously.

Eh, I really don't care about how they see me. If anything, isn't that kinda what the whole "hippy" thing was about, just... "doing your own thing"? Wasn't your entire anti-label sermon about that, not caring about conforming to some ideal?
