That would be awesome, I've considered such myself... Many islands in canada aren't too expensive, especially considering an average house cost between $100 - $300 thousand, why not just buy an island... $57,000 for that island is rather easily acheivable with dedication, especially with say 3-5 people it could be done fairly quickly...

eBay has islands on it all the time. I am an avid Island-browser.

    Oh, dreaming is fantastic.

I'm so excited to see renewed intereset in this project- and yes Erowid, it is most possible! And a person of your experience(or future knowledge) has some assest to throw around. It makes perfect sense to have a learned community, we can't all be clueless:)
Bochiechio and I spoken via e-mail about setting up a website for the project, however I haven't heard from him in quite a while now. So if any of y'all are computer literate and think you could set up a site, contact me
Additionally, I'm now starting to think of a name for the island community. I realise that names truly mean nothing, but in this case I see a need for one. I myslef like PALA because of the Huxley book mentioned earlier, but I'm eager to hear your ideas.
    Thanks and keep it coming!:)

well Its nothing amazing, but I got a start on it anyway. check it out at islandfolk.tripod.com, and on another note I really wish there were something for cheap with a better grow schedule, because that is an important complecation to be considering, yet I realize at the same time we're probably just gonna have to think of a way around this issue rather than find some strangely cheap southern island.
As for the name idea I would think it should be symbolic of the vision behind the idea of the island commune, for that would convey more truth than one that may just sound pretty fitting. Or else we could alway go with an icelantic mythology name seeing as its gonna be kinda in the norhtland like Thor's Landing or Odin's Isle. I don't know that last one's probably just me though:p, I love old scandanavian mythology.

Awesome! Thanks for putting it together! I truly appreciate it.
For some suggestions ( although now I realise it is merely a roughdraft site):
the background makes my eyes strain, think it could be darker?
and later when it is developed more, could we put the different categories on different pages, like links or what not.
    Again, thanks much!

I'm starting to visualize this project getting outta my mind and to a latitiude-longitude location:)

That Leaning Island in the philipines I thought looked pretty sweet though, I don't think there would be too many immigration issues getting into the phillipines yet getting solar panels over there might be a bit of a complecation.

Erowid, thanks for updating the site. You're quick!:)

Now my question/subject up for debate, how should the investing be sent up?
I was thinking a desposit, then suggested $10 a month to begin. More on that later.
ALSO_ a preinvestment quiz that each person should take to insure that like-minded people are ok with one another... do you understand what I am trying to say?
Ill work on that and post it for y'all to e-mail the results.

Yeah it's seems to be a good place to live...but to built something you've got to find some wood near of there...and it's interesting that this is an island not too much in the north (this is not yet a polar zone) ...this little island is in the south of a little state in the south east of Canada (Halifax is not so far away).

And i want to know if there's a risk of collision with an Iceberg...this island seems to be not so far away from the tragic Titanic event...whatever hum...
I'm very interested to live out there...but we've got to built this dream in something real...and this is not the easier thing to do...
Firstly... built a big house warm enough to protect us from cold wind and snow in winter...if we can built something like that we nearly win.
Secondly ...how to survive after we have built a warm place......food is the second question...because you' can't have a farm in this place...maybe fishes(i don't like fishes glouuuup!)

So before we have our hamac and joint in our hippie mouths there's a lot of work to be done.

    sorry for my average english.

I completely agree- those factor have been factors for thought. Obviously food shelter etc. will be a concern. Also I believe that you believe there is one specific island being disscussed. Not so. We here are disscussing the possiblities as well as exploring the available island for consideration. Island trade ownership frequently, by the time we've enough funds to take the next step, our hoped-for island may not be up for grabs. So now what we can do is keep an eye or two out for the available ones and learn the systtem a bit.

p.s. I'll be looking to get more info etc. on the site.then i can make a new thread to announce the site

what about drinking water, electricity and dump? How about high winds? What if the island gets washed off with everything on it? There arent enough trees. How will you earn money?

I'm savin money for some things now and Im gonna hold on to a separate fund cause my parents are payin for the college horticulture degree. I need money to get permaculture certifacation, solar instalation, and earth molds natural building courses. Yet, overall I think you have a better mind for the collecting of finances than I do probably so that's all you, but the monthly 10-20$ initially collection sounds like a good start. I have somethin like 3100$ on me now but a good bit of that will go to courses. As to the water supply issue, I don't imagine water purifacation will be that much of an obstacle we just have to evaporate it, and condense it again. Electricity could be a combination solar/wind system, with a battery system for power at night, food could be obtained from a permaculture system(extremely low maitanance, yet reliable), and I really think that covers most major angles.
Lastly as for the quiz idea, I almost think anyone willing to throw away there tie's with society for the sake of community living has to have quite a few of the qualities we'd be lookin for, but I suppose a couple on target questions definitely wouldn't hurt.
Once it comes down to it though we should be a commune of very accomodating ideals and free-spirited unregulated practices. I beleive this is the only way we may hope to turn up the number of willing commune members to make substancial enough investment.

I have to say to any skeptics the only thing we are really doing here that I haven't heard about being done before is the island part of that so any issues not related to that will be easily resolved, yet those problems individual to the island setting are going to be are biggest concern. That and getting good investors.
