NO! No shock collar! A nice strong spray bottle with pepper/water spray & using your Serious Mean Voice. Night Alive! I truly know what it's like to have a dog that just flippin refused to quit chasing cars - and now he is an inside/backyard fence kind of chap. But really, please no shock collars. Conditioning is highly over-rated...
Anyone who says it doesn't hurt the dog is commpletely full of shit, as when I was a kid my dad and I tested it out just holding it in our hands and walking to the line and ZAP! Now even though it definitely does hurt, I can also say that your dog will get smart eventually and know that they can't walk up to the line and that they have to get a running start first. It's not worth digging a trench line all the way around your property and llaying the wire
There's no reason to use a shock collar, dogs should be trained using love and positive reinforcement. If they do something wrong you need to be use a firm tone of voice with them and maybe growl at them so that they know they did something wrong. They aren't going to learn to behave how you want them to overnight it takes a while, but as long as you treat them with the love and respect they deserve, and using reasonable discipline when they need it, they will be a well behaved member of your family.
I approve of shock collars for barking control and containment type uses (invisible fence)...because after the first few shocks the dog knows what will happen and its basically their choice I dont approve of remote shock collars...I highly disapprove of ANY ANIMAL BEING OFF OWNER PROPERTY WITHOUT A LEASH <<this includes CATS
Remote collars have there uses, they should not be used to just let your dog run around outside then shock the poor thing when you want it to come home cause you never properly trained it. And as mentioned before, the ones that vibrate are enough to get an unattentive dog to stop and listen. What BRAD said is true, most dogs will only get shocked 2-3 times before they associate that beep the collar makes with an unpleasant shock. Also, most colors have adjustments, so you can do it without causing real physical harm to the dog. I think a collar that shocks a dog for barking is wrong
I need to clear some things up here. If you are still wondering about my post. For one I do NOT own a shock collar. Nor have I bought one of plan to. I got a good suggestion from someone here. For all you city, small urban people, a leash is not necessary where I live. Me neighbors are miles away. I am literally out on my own. We had one day where she messed up big, and she knows it. We have run into small animals, mostly deer, which she does not chase, that alone is a huge accomplishment. I also always carry a leash with me, but rarely use it. I was merely asking, don't think i'm harming my animals.
