I dont know about her, but if you want to crochet and dont break hairs use a normal sewing needle and a string to pull the hairs in. It breaks less hairs than separating. I quit crocheting like 2-3 months ago because i got bored, and i dont have tons of loose hair.

When you say string, do you mean like thread discrete enough to just remain in the dread afterwards?

yea, but u dont leave it in the dread. it acts like a hook. You pull it twice trough the needle so you get a loop. Then you put the loose hairs in the loop and pull them trough. Alot easier and better for your dreads than crocheting.

    a) from day one of dreadlocks, you've been washing your hair with any old cheapo shampoo, regardless of residues and all that, and have no sign of any problems

    Yesss

    b) you do some occasional crochet maintenance and haven't observed it causing problems such as a load of extra broken hairs which all pop back out of the dread again

Not much, probably a little, but I break more hairs when I rip 'm apart

    c) there are no other secrets to your amazing dreads?

    Ehmm nope :S

Your dreads rock!!! I was about to get the scissors out today until I saw the future. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Did you have help crocheting your dreads or did you do it solo?

I crochet myself, but lately I sometimes get help. But I'm trying not to do it as often as I used to.
Great that I inspired you 'cause you really shouldn't cut! Your dreads are coming along so wonderfully!

    Amybird:

Well.. shampoos don't leave residu in my hair, the key is just to wash 'm out carefully. I also condition once in a while, just to make them a little softer, but the same thing, just rinse well after. The only thing you really shouldn't use is wax, wax leaves a residu that's hard to get out. The key to speed up the dreading process is to wash very often. And I did some random crocheting to flatten the bumps (which I didn't like that time and now love :p, but they keep on coming)

Well I think you are perfect proof that ultimately we have to make our own decisions and follow whatever works for our own dreads :)

WorldPeace, you said there are youtube videos for how you've crocheted your hair- but I am seeing videos showing vastly different things. Would you mind explaining how you do this? Or perhaps post a link to a video or tutorial that is useful?

I have been on this journey for a year and it looks as if I backcombed yesterday... I am debating whether I should just leave it or try something. I'd prefer do nothing, but after a year perhaps its time to try. Thought I'd try my hand at this.

    Thanks :)
    Your hair is powerful inspiring.

Hm, I'm a little nervous to pierce through a dread. Still, if your hair is anything to go by, it will be fine. I'll try it on a few. Thanks for the info, WorldPeace! =)

You have absolutely gorgeous dreads, I am in awe of how fantastic they look and that you kept up with such a great/detailed timeline. Very inspirational.
