Im watching the English series Shameless on Hubu or Netflix and instead of --figure it out---they say --sort it. There are a bunch I can't pick up on, even in context. I like the series and any Irish series also, mainly for the wonderful accents! Derry Girls was a kick.

Candy--it's different than the American version for sure, but I seem to like the English one better. Both are good.

Not quite. A bar is a place in a public building where you can obtain refreshments. In hotels, theaters and other other adult themed buildings they normally sell alcohol. However, in leisure centers, gyms and hospitals alcohol is not sold. The term 'licenced bar' indicates that they have a licence. Their are 3 portions in a licence. Beers, Wines and spirits. Not all bars are licenced for all 3. Historically, theaters were not granted a beer licence, mainly due to lack of a cellar, but some theaters now sell canned beer.

Pubs are normally associated with alcohol sales, but in recent years, with supermarket competition and high alcohol taxes, many of them need to sell food in order to survive.
To confuse everyone, pubs that sell quality food often call themselves bars.

If you want to get really confused, visit the west of Ireland.
Pubs serve soft drinks AND TEA. Children are also admitted as long as they don't consume alcohol. However, they can purchase alcohol for their parents and family.
Some Irish pubs have a post office counter and a few sell groceries. Breweries and companies are only allowed to own a small number of pubs, the rest are private businesses.
A good question for the pub quiz.......How many pubs do Guinness own........The answer is 10, the maximum number allowed by law..
