if even a little is left, it might lock up... but it will lock up around the wax, the wax will trap water every time you wash your hair, and you will get mold. from the look of the picture, you definitely do not have it nearly all out. sorry dude...

it's your hair... do it how you want... but don't come crying when you have moldy dreads from all that junk in your hair.

Just so you know, your not gonna get all the wax out in one wash. You need to wash several times to get all that sh!t out. You must learn to be patient.

comb out your hair and then wash like ten times till it feels like normal hair. then section and start again. its the only way to be safe.

what everyone here said. don't bother trying to start until the wax is all out. otherwise it'll end up a big nasty mess. comb the shit out, wash your hair over and over with natural soap, then when the wax is all gone you can backcomb your hair if you want, but like soaringeagle said... there's really only one method at the end. neglect. there's nothing you can do to really speed up the locking process, and besides, everyone is different. just relax and enjoy your personal journey, and don't listen to the people who say your hair will never lock. have patience. peace, mate :)

Ok I'm going to wash all the wax out and if any backcombs stay in ill leave them in and I'll do the neglect method. any info on how long that will take, what kind of shampoo I can use? What I can and cannot do?

Any natural, residue-free shampoo is great. I recommend http://www.drbronner.com/index.html, but there are other shampoo's out there that work great.

I suggested earlier cutting your hair, and I honestly think that is your best bet. You don't know too well that's going on yet , but if you cut your hair you don't have to worry about that nasty wax. However, if you do manage to properly remove the wax from your hair, then there are various ways you can go about this.

Personally, I'm going the Neglect route. It takes a long time, but it's Nature truly working on your hair.

Backcombing is also an option minus the wax. It speeds up the Neglect method a bit, and also you can shape your dreads to what size you want them and such. From the sounds of how impatient you are, I'd suggest Backcombing.

Either way, best of luck to you bro.

    Namaste, John.

EDIT: DO NOT WAX YOUR HAIR AGAIN.
Don't wash TOO often. Once every 2 weeks - month is fine.
Don't brush, don't condition. Don't use regular manufactured shampoo.

Other than that, do whatever you want to your hair. It will lock up no matter what.

soaringeagle is so right.. i took the long route:
    backcomb-wax-cry-wash-wash-wash-wash-neglect-dread

wax is hard to ever get out, but it will dread with a little wax in it, just not as good. for me it looks like the hair dreads for every little wax i get out.
knotty how how forums > salons and wax producers like dhhq

your hair looks perfekt for dreading

    thanks I guess I'll be patient, if Jah intended on us to get dreadlocks I think he would rather us do it the natural way plus, I can't imagine anyone backcombing the Lion of Judah ^^;;

Oh one last question (hopefully), can I get cornrows while neglecting? what will that do to the process. thanks if you can help me with that since I wanted something new with my hair (as long as it doesnt mess up the dreading)

    braids yea cornrows no
cornrows are braids with different sections from different parts of your scalp that go along your scalp
    no good for dreading
braids use 3 sectiuons from 1 area and dont follow the scalp so will be fine
alternatively instead of braiding with 3 sections, each braid (each time u cross the sections over eachother) re-section the 3 sections randomly, wont be a braid or dread but in between and will result in dreads faster

that was too complicated for me to understand (I don't know about braiding at all, though I did know what cornrows were ^^;;). wait when my hair is dreading from neglect will doing stuff like twisting the hair (I do that when I'm bored) help it dread or mess it up >>

i play with my hair a lot, and anything that makes it knot up makes it dread better. i kinda just rub the strands with my fingers, and it causes knots, and that helps it lock tighter quicker.

uhm no lol cornrows will instanly reverse any progress your dreads have made. think about it man, first of all they have to comb your hair (instant dread destroyage) and then they make little tiny braids along your scalp which hold your hair in place so no dreadage could possibly occur. just do NOTHING. or forget about dreads.

does anyone know how well the wool method would work?
I tried backcombing again but it doesnt hold tight and they look alot fatter than they are supposed to be. should I just take out the "dreads" and do backcombing a different way, or would the wool method work well? I want to do something natural now and I still am tempted to do the neglect method but for me thats kind of like a last resort. I wouldn't want to use that method if it took years. this is what my hair looks like now =( (no wax at least)

How you have it now is perfect.

Now leave it alone, wash every once in a while, and that's it.

still doesn't look like you got all the wax out dude. but yeah... wash every week or so, and leave it alone. it will look loose, crappy, fuzzy, falling apart for a loooong time. just be patient. if you expect your dreads to look mature right away, you are in for a big disappointment, because they won't. for a loooong time.
