This selfless sacrifice that you are saying the chinese government is making is politics. The politics of propaganda, of putting your country on a world stage, camouflaged by fireworks and shiny stadiums full of smiling people, to encourage the rest of the world to forget or disregard your diabolical human rights' violations.

Not watching the games is the least you should do.

the olympics are supposed to be a thing outside of the normal procedures of existance. it's its own bubble of personal acheivement for the people who've busted their asses to be good at one crowning skill. why on EARTH china got it is completely beyond me. that's a huge WTF. but to diregard those innocent of any wrongdoing and denying their chance to meet a lifetime goal is grossly unfair. the IOC should be heavily scrutinized, AGAIN.

though, the nice thing about china getting the olympics is that the tibetans are getting way more attention than they have in a very long time. i just don't think the olympics should be boycotted.

The athletes who have busted their asses will still get to compete and win their medals, or recognition, or whatever, regardles whether Joe Public switches on his TV or not. I do feel pity for the athletes who have prepared their whole lives for this event, but I for one, won't be watching.

All 1.2 billion of them, no?

I recently had a guy from Beijing stay at my place for a week. He was a math and English teacher at an international school in Beijing so I guess his is not a typical opinion but he was all for a free independent Tibet and actually spent his last two days searching for books here, that are banned in China, that he could give as presents to some of his friends who teach near there.

i don't see anyplace the quoted used or implied the word or even the thought "selfless".

at any rate i know of NO major government, nor for the matter, few if any minor ones, NOT quilty of "diabolical human rights violations". which is not to condone ANY of any of their doing so either. but it IS an honest observation of an existing reality. not one that is cast in concrete or needs to continue, but one that does, at this moment in time, exist.

kc's got a point too. for me though, i AM more interested in people everywhere being allowed to live as THEY believe in, then in ANY competition of athletic prowess.

all of which may be a non-answer to half the question, but IS honestly how i feel about it.

china's government IS doing naughty things. so IS america's. BOTH need to stop doing so. and so do a lot of other places.

I have talked to a few chinese people, of course they are not the whole 1.2 billion...and they say that tibet was always part of china centuries ago and they don't like being told what to do with their country by foreigners..
So obviously there is more than one perspective of Tibet from the people who know about it more than most of the world.

All of the protesting won't put a dent in the attendance of the Olympics, because there are many many people out there, who value their own entertainment more than other people's lives. And I have no doubt that many many more people will watch the Olympics at home, just because they want to.

But I am in favour of all the protests themselves, because they may not have damaged China, or persuaded China to free Tibet, or even stop infringing on human rights; the protests have spread awareness and disgust all over the world in fantastic proportions. And I'm all for that.

Who knows, maybe it isn't enough to do anything substantial now, but maybe protests against the Olympic Games will serve as a spark in freeing Tibet, or at least in putting an end to the gross human rights negligence from the Chinese Government.

I'd sacrifice my life to free Tibet, to sacrifice a sport or an event is NOTHING.

    that's terribly noble of you.

the chinese oppression of Tibet is outrageous, and it always has been. I won't be watching the olympics (though I probably wouldn't have in the first place)
