Yes, Americans are ignorant, which is why they are happy. Bure mloya nebo kroyet, Vihri snezhnaye kruta, To kak zver ona zavoyet, To zaplachet kak detya!
pfft. it's all such crap. people HAVE to know about america because we're scary. that's fine, i can understand that. but the shit you people see about us is skewed, limited and in many cases so far gone from reality that it can't even be considered a fairy tale. inaddition, you're average american is just working hard, day in and day out. before i had children and had half the workload i do now, i could really pay attention to nifty yet useless things like the artsy cinema, music not played ont he radio, politics. now i'm brain dead from only getting a few hours of sleep per night and having NO ADULTS to talk to. but i konw a good number of truly horrifically stupid and shallow non-americans to give me the comfortable knowledge that everyone else is butt fucking stupid, bigotted, shallow and narrowminded as well. it's just a matter of what's important to someone, and, sadly, non-americans are just not important to most americans.
Good point. Most people are stupid in general. Anyhow, the points that you mentioned are partially why I don't believe in Democracy. These peoples should not be allowed to vote if they are so completely unaware of the issues.
that's why it used to be only the property owners who voted. but at any rate, it's why we have the electoral college and the mythical good idea of the "checks and balances" system. *sigh* it was a good idea. you should have to pass a test to vote, but that would depreive the parties of their mouth breathing trogs to push the voting buttons due to who has the best bs.
"it's just a matter of what's important to someone, and, sadly, non-americans are just not important to most americans." by mynameiskc Ok, that's partly true, everyone is an egoist, you don't have to care more about the people around the world than you do about yourself. But at least to know about their existence, some really important events that are happening, 'cuz they might as well hit you one day. I'm not talking about transfering money to the poor in Africa or smth. Just to be aware, the thing exists. To BraveSirRubin: respect and uvazhuha for those lines)
Well, the think about america/americans is that people are afraid of the USA, mainly because you invade random nations for oil...
well its been an opinion over here (uk) that americans are all dumb and fat but when i went there i only met a couple of idiots like the kid who took his gun to school (why?). but i watch alot of news from around the world and i must say the most amuzing is fox its full of properganda and subliminal messages then they even put a story on about a duck in a flower pot this is ment to be the international news for fucks sake. althouth the best story i say was about the steel they retrived form the world traids centre there making it into a warship. the guy they interviewd was a little like the people on that vid ranting about how they couldnt wait to get it out there to start protecting people its a warship it does not protect it kills end of. if you wanna know why the rest of the world thinks your thick look to your leader the man who belives that one day man and fish will live in peace.
to be honest, a lot of it is just sour grapes. i listen, i pay attention, mainly because i'm a curious sort. but we're not a homegenous group like sentient wants so desperately to believe. i figure it probably gives him something to hold onto, thinking americans are an easy target for disdain. but we're people from all over the world. we're not just upper middle class white people, you know. we're not just inner city gangs. we're not just inbred hillpeople, either. anyone trying to classify the usa as one big ugly ignorant mass is guilty of the same sort of hypocrisy and xenophobia they're trying to pin on the usa.
man, most people JUST DON'T HAVE THE TIME. between working 60 hours a week, trying to get in some family time and eating, there's not much left for most people. i have WAY more leeway to learn about other people and their viewpoints, but not everyone is a student or on the dole or working a short week. i'd wager the average ass-busting laborer in some second or third world country doesn't know much more than the average usa laborer.
That is the pisser about American culture in the belief of working hard, 'go-getting' and the 'dog eat dog' thing. I don't doubt that working a 60 hour week is true because we are tripping over ourselves to be just like America in how it functions politically and culutrally, which saddens me. But again refering back to the first post and link, either loads of people were interviewed and edited ruthlessly, or a lot of Americans are pig ignorant about the rest of the world. It maybe about the type of news and media that is offered, but what I cannot understand is an attitude that is dismissive and indulging in deliberate ignorance as if it doesn't matter, in the way one or two posts have come across. Who do you all think you are, French? Then I'll have a reason to tell you all to fuck-off!!!!
we have loads of french people, so that's not so far off the mark. at any rate, you can't blame people for getting irritated at being expected to know everthing that doesn't effect them immediately. there's just not enough time and energy in one day. and my husband loves some of the really mindlessly stupid programming, because he doesn't watch tv for edification. he watches it at bedtime so that he can go to sleep. he has to shut his head OFF. it's on all the time.
The reason that people think that most Americans are blthering idiots is that most of them ARE blithering idiots! Where I work there is a large cross section of the population streaming in all day, and you could stand there 8 hours and not find one person to have an intelligent conversation with. This government could not engage in or continue its war-mongering, fascist policies if the majority of Americans had any real clue as to what is going on in the world. But the fact is that the overwhelming majority of people just swallow the rhetoric that they hear from the government, and that most of the mainstream media dutifully reports, hook, line, and sinker. That's exactly what they want you to do. Every time I turn around I hear people repeating this mindless rhetoric that we're in Iraq to protect us from the terrorists that caused 9/11, that we should 'support our troops', that we need to build more prisons, or some other meaningless crap that the government wants us to parrot, that I almost puke from hearing it. Virtually no one takes the time or effort to really look into the real motives behind this war-mongering administration's actions. The world doesn't THINK that most Americans are stupid-it knows damn well that they are!
*sigh* another part of the problem. no one wants to talk seriously to you and open up because you're hostile.
Some of my points have been made already, but whatever: 1. People in general are quite stupid, especially in a place where they are encouraged to be themselves and express themselves... the inner idiot just comes out of everybody. Sure, Americans are dumb, but I've met plenty of dumb Europeans too. 2. A lot of our culture does suck. That is what happens when you live in a big country and people can vote with their pocketbooks to keep stuff like McDonalds and American Idol (which I will add originated in Europe... not exactly something to be proud of) afloat for decades. Capitalism is great because it's the only efficient system, but it does sometimes lead to crap like McDonalds. Gotta take the good with the bad. 3. A lot of the best stuff from the last century has come from America. For instance, although there have been plenty of great foreign films, the cinema has been dominated by America. We are the leaders in new technology and science. 4. America sucks, but it's probably the best place to live, in my opinion. A lot of the places that would be better, such as Canada and the UK, are being run into the ground by excessively big gov't (great example is socialized healthcare... if that ever happens here, I'm leaving, period). I really can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. So, all in all, America has lots of stupidity, but it's a lot more complicated than that. There is a disturbingly large mass of morons floating about America, but we have more than our share of Nobel prize winning economists as well.
