Human right is to live in clean environment. There is now 55 satellites with atomic reactors on the orbit. Only one fall down already. SNAP 9-A in 1964 with 2.1 pounds of plutonium. Nobody heard about it? All such military satellites belong to USA. ALL. What has happened? Body cancer in human race increased by 35% in one year. Count causalities of that and you will discover that Castro killed only 0.01% in comparison to that massacre - and that were not innocent people but his enemies. And USA people tried to assasinate Fiedel 999 times. So please give him a peace. Shouldn't you have respect to your enemy, especially if he survived so many ambushes on his life?
Look,I don't give a shit about Cuba or any other dictatorship.I wouldn't want to live under the conditions that any dictatorship institutes. Our disagreement stems from the fact that I believe there are some programs that should be socialised here.If run correctly I think medicine, the law and education should be such. The rest could/should remain as it is,only the politicians should do a better job than they have the last 8 years in stopping the bleeding of jobs/factories overseas. The one thing I agree with Pat Buchanon on,is his fortress America idea.I say close the borders TIGHT/ly and slap huge tarriffs on the companies that would rather pay 5 bucks a day labor on,for example, tennis shoes that re-sell for 100-200 bucks. That goes for the rest of the products that are made by so-called "american" companies. They don't care about this country much, only accumulating vast amounts of riches.Stop sending money overseas to other countries until the national debt is paid off.And stop the damned wars so that that money that goes up in smoke and blood can help us,the citizens of this country. Then when this country is healed up,we can then begin to help those who need it.Don't confuse me with someone that thinks communism would work---it doesn't and the way capitalism is "working now" will,I'm sure ,be looked upon in the future as an aberration that was truly inimical to the interests of humanity.Change,as scary as it is to some, must come.
Like i said earlier in the thread, i'm not a fan of what the u.s. government does either, but their crimes are not a sufficient excuse for cuba's. you know the whole "2 wrongs dont make a right" thing. That being said you are more free in the territory of the u.s. government than that of the cuban government. i know the millions fleeing cuba to the us is only anecdotal but it's still pretty convincing.
of course it would be naive to say that the Cuban government hasnt practiced capital punishment. which i view as a severly negative factor of cuba. but as for "communisms" faults, the only faults that apply to cuba is the fact that they still have markets. (and of course the oiligarich hierarchy, but thats a given) the market should have been abolished shortly after the revolution, but they didnt and the market has causedcompetition for labor, and thus lead to more crimes. which results in the use of capital punishment. so i guess you could say that Cuba is too belated and is stuck in Stalinist from. which is why there is a great degree of political repression in Cuba. but optimistically speaking, they are slowly moving away from the Stalinist repressive state. yeah forget the fact that the Cuban exile community is home to the rightist gusano terrorists. and that most of the exile community lives near poverty. what ever you say about cuba, the US hasnt supported the cuban exiles nearly enough to make sure they actually benefit from fleeing cuba. they send half of them back anyways. this i agree is a very bad policy. but the same can be said of every other country. you need passports and a lot of money to leave capitalist countries to, and its not very easy to get either of those. and all your traveling is tracked and recorded. censorship is a problem yes, free elections are pointless because it only prolongs the state. capital punishment was last used in 2003, and has ceased to be used. due process i dont know much about, but they dont hold people in prison with out criminal charges like they do in western empires. no testimony from any supposed victims have provided any real evidence for the use of torture. people like Huber Matos claiming they were tortured cannot be taken seriously for a second, for very explicit reasons. even Cuba did torture prisoners, they dont have a system of torture like the US and others do. thats not a government policy, so you cant blame the government for human trafficking, thats simply a result of market related crime. no it certainly isnt ok. leftist authoritarianism is tyrannic, repressive, and stifle freedom. but rightist authoritarianism is much worse. cuba isnt a police state like the UK, US, or germany. there are no cameras around Havana. and the population is as well armed as the police. there are all ready walls on the US, they simply let you leave, but they have their eye on you all the time. your still susceptable to repression if your traveling to somewhere like the EU. and we still dont even get free (let alone decent) health care. i certainly dont why would they want to do that? so they can get imprisoned? plus they legally cant leave the US either.
Ah that's true, like most fans of communism, its good enough for them, but not good enough for you. But do try to catch one of Fidel's 8 hour speeches while you're there. This is one of the most incredibly naive, ignorant things I have heard in a long time. Truly breathtaking.
i dont quite get what your saying i actually would enjoy hearing one. i take it you thought i was saying that Cuba wasnt a police state. but what i meant was, its not a police state like the US, UK, or Germany. as in its not like them.
Are you so sure? The more I hear about how things are in the UK or were under Blair, the more they seem to be. And here in the States after the passage of FISA, what else would you call us? Our correspondence can be monitored our protests are regulated. Next they'll tell us what to wear.
Citizens of the US, UK and Germany are free to leave at anytime, are Cuban subjects free to leave their country?
Yes I am so sure. Honestly, if you think the US is a police state you should try visiting a real one.
Cool, which one have you been too? As an outsider were your treated like everyone else in that state or were you treated much better because you were a tourist? Is it nice in Cuba? I've seen pics of the Sierra Madre, it looks nice..
Things may have changed, but this is what I think is accurate. In 1994 the U.S. set a quota of 20,000 immigrant visas annually for Cubans of which 5,000 come from a lottery system. The special lottery administered by American officials in Havana gives Cubans permanent U.S. residency. However, it has not been done on annual basis since its implementation in 1995. The special lottery is highly sought out since those selected are entitled to a Green Card and work assistance. In addition, their children are allowed to enroll in the public school system. One of the biggest incentives is that in a time period of five years or less they may gain eligibility to apply for U.S. citizenship. However, there are some requirements as to who can apply for the lottery. Those applying must be at least 18 years old and no older than 55 years old. They must have a minimum of a high school education and for the last two years must have worked. After winning the lottery, the applicants are required to undergo and pass an immigration visa interview as part of the screening process. The interview is conducted by the U.S. Cuban Interests Section in Havana and the applicant must also submit medical records and any criminal records. The purpose of the screening process is to ensure that they will not become a burden to the United States government. Lottery winners are entitled to bring their spouse and children who must be under 21 years of age. http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/cubaimmigration.html
I think there are very few true police states left in the world, maybe North Korea and Cuba, Turkmenistan, Iran, I guess Saudi Arabia, China? I've been to places that are definitely not democratic, like Cameroon, Dubai, China, Tunisia, Morocco, and Kazakhstan, but they were pretty mild. On the one hand yes, as a foreigner you get better treatment but on the other hand you stand out a lot so attract more attention. Usually as a foreigner you're more worried about corrupt security people than anyone actually trying to hassle you for political reasons. They are too busy harassing the locals, and as long as you are somewhere tourists are supposed to be, they like your money spending ways. As for official security hassles, lately US Customs has been the worst of them all.
^^i think china could qualify as a police state. oh i dont know, the US is getting worse by the day, its certainly a police state. military troops forcing people to leave their homes in Hurricane Katrina affected areas, and the recent flood areas. the problem is, that people that had little or no damage were forced to leave their homes too. and dont forget that "demonstration" in Denver of military occupation during a national security threat, or whatever reasons those morons talk about. also, there are 8 million americans listed for detention in the case of a "national emergency". http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/20/21950/7576/933/518756 the EU is certainly a police state. do some research. maybe their not on par with cuba as far as political repression goes, but with the amount of surveillance and information per person, it doesn't look like there exactly looking to play nice in the future.
Don't move people, the gov' gets accused of leaving people to their fate, or the ridiculous: “Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People”. Moving people in a natural disaster is not a "police state" , it is crisis management. I wonder what you would be saying if the military left all the people that did not want to move, to die? Name a few places that were not in the path of the disaster, or were never going to be effected? I live in the EU, I think you are wrong. Yes, I have done some research, I have lived here all my life The difference between our "surveillance society" and a true "police state" is that there are checks and balances here, and people actually WANT CCTV cameras, they request them to be be put up in their community, they CAN request the information stored about them http://www.foi.gov.uk/
