They are more popular in the UK and rest of Europe. They released "Crime Of The Century" in 1974 but it didn't really get to the USA until 1976. Also I was told by a Canadian dude who was a teenager in the 70's that in Canada Supertramp was quite popular in the late 70's.
As well as influenced by blues, Supertramp seems to be very influenced by jazz, especially on the Crisis! What Crisis?! (1975) album.
I really like and respect Supertramp's lyrics, they do albums in an artistic way. Their lyrics are quite unique, very sad in places, they sound like they are crying many times, and then their is that sentimental masterpiece "Even In The Quietest Moments". I can relate very much to the lyrics. You know that "Crime Of The Century" (1974) was influenced by the album released a year before, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon" (1973).
I like Supertramp, but know they are uncool. i think some of the people in Supertramp were in 60s psychedelic bands.
Supertramp is listed in the top progressive rock albums on the site www.prograrchives.com, the site of progressive rock. I always knew Supertramp was progressive rock, I've listened so much to them. None of you will convince me otherwise. There are different styles of progressive rock, for example: Yes, ELP, Genesis: Symphonic Progressive Rock Pink Floyd: Psychadelic/Space Rock Rush, Uriah Heep, Kansas: Art Rock Jethro Tull: Progressive Folk Rock Supertramp, Queen, Allan Parson's Project: Progressive Rock Related Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Procul Harem, Styx: Proto-Progressive Rock
my farther likes supertramp a lot, but i never really got into them, perhaps i should check them out.
Most people who like Supertramp are not of your generation. The reason that many people don't like Supertrmap is that it is the type of melon collie music that is very emotioal and deals a lot with losing instead of winning, this is not the empowering out there lets do a revolution music, it is very introspective and prety much a drag just like the 70's were a drag. It's no wonder why the 70's are called the "Me Decade", The "Me Decade" represents intrsopection, reflection and self indulgence, It's about "Me". Supertramp's music is totally of the "Me Decade".
i like them a lot, then and now. some of their lyrics are very powerful, and their music was not bad either. i still listen from time to time.
i thought the same thing...i didnt know supertramp where ever considered prog and im a huge supertramp fan....i think "breakfast in america" was my first favorite album.
