i was thinkin' more a comprehensive than concrete definition, as several posters in this thread seem determined to demonstrate (via links) that Metal seems to be a genre many seem to be ignorant about .... instead of bombing people with hours of music wouldn't it be easier to give the parameters that define metal and let people explore the music for themselves?
I like punk influenced metal/grind myself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIB9Cai5kZ4 Dear, I'll stay gold just to keep these pasts at bay To keep the loneliest of nights from claiming you and to keep these longest of days from waking you For I felt the greatest of winters coming and I saw you as seasons shifting from blue to grey That's where the coldest of these days await me and distance lays her heavy head beside me There I'll stay gold, forever gold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpP9a2B4V-k dammit i cant seem to embed the videos
If they could be bothered enough to explore it themselves maybe. Otherwise it's better to give some examples that can be listened right away.
Haha noooooooooooooo this si the biggest and shittiest argument among the metal community with the millions of subgenres and what not. Lets not go there haha
Pfft, where would be the fun in that? Music is about sound, not description. People shouldn't pigeonhole music, they're only missing out when they do that. Also this;
I have always advocated for a better understanding of the genre by listeners. Metal is like wine, out there somewhere is a band for everyone. Far to many metal heads are swept up in how "hard" their bands are and denounce everything else as not metal. This is why I generally segregate myself from the general metal community. I have found good bands and songs from genres I initially hated, but there is talent everywhere. From bands as whiney as The Devil Wears Prada, to some of the most perfect vocals of Opeth to Metallica and everything in between. To be quite honest. For how "open minded" people claim to be on this thread as well as others I have noticed, it seems there is a basic trend of Metallica, Megadeth, Inflames and then Northern European bands. I love them to do not get me wrong. But suggests your all over 30. The culture has moved on, those bands are still groundworkingly popular. Evolution is evident. I tend to mention Lamb of God a fair amount, they are simply my favorite band, and have been for the entirety of my relationship with metal. I do not understand why so many people do not like them. According to one person on this thread, they are overrated. Anyone have any opinions as to why though? I am curious. I have met people that do not like them, and I usually just suggest they listen to an entire album, or every album. I have never had any friends of mine take that advice and continue to dislike LoG after, but to each his own either way. Seriously though, at the very least, go listen to their newest album "Wrath" if you have not already in its entirety. It is an amazing album, my second favorite next to "Ashes of the Wake". In Canada it was the number one seller in HMV and Sunrise Records for a while when it came out, which is pretty damn good for a metal album. Not to mention that two different songs were nominated in 2010 and 2011 for best metal performance Grammys.
I don't HATE lamb of god, but here's what ruined this kind of metal for me. It got real popular in the underground, and then a million bands that sound just like them came out and the ''genre'' became saturated and cheezy. Same thing happened when a band called August Burns Red came out. I LOVED them and they were my favourite band. They were a christian band, but their riffs and their breakdowns were amazing and fresh but then EVERYONE copied their style, and now I cant even listen to August Burns Red anymore. By the way here they are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4ME8lV3Wbg Also, I feel like its ''beginner'' metal. Not to be an elitist or anything, but it seems like it's nothing deeper than shock value. ''Now you have something to die for'' ? I mean come on! Any teenager who is going through a ''phase'' and might not even be listening to metal in 6 months is sporting black hair and a LoG t-shirt. They have no clue what metal is about, they say anything to shock their parents and look badass, and it's that kind of people that create stereotypes that makes us have long winded debates on forums like this one. For people who are not really part of the ''real'' metal community, these pubescent angry ''fuck my parents and the world'' teenagers are the face of metal, and it just kinda tarnishes something that is so dear to me. just my 2 cents!
P.s. Telepath hate thread turned in to an interesting conversation about metal/forum where we shared a bunch of metal - how do you like them apples!? haha no hate
Really just because metal is so diverse I can't be bothered by bands like Slipknot and/or Lamb of god clones. Why let that ruin 'metal' as a whole for you. I'm not saying those bands are crap or something, I just can't get into those metalbands myself either and it's so easily ignored when focussed on a total different kind of metal which you DO dig. When you dig bands like Lamb of God I can imagine you check out similar bands and get dissappointed with the clones though.
Well, I see two sides of this. Of course, there is that you are being way too superficial, and the clones ruined the uniqueness of the band But there is also that the clones could highlight problems with the original band, by having similar problems in more extreme ways (say, some of the clones have really disjointed melodies that don't fit the songs, and then you start to notice that about the original a bit too)
I have to certain extents with movies and Television. Crime dramas especially. Cold Case completely illuminated how connect-the-dots their 'mysteries' tend to be.
that was pretty epic and awesome, actually. I think it definitely has more in common with classical music than with Sepultura, just for example. although sepultura is another metal band that i could really get into if it weren't for the vocals..I love the tribal sound of their drums. Thanks guys for broadening my metal horizons.
How do u knw that that's the biggest argument in the metal"community" Sound like a poser in disguise here...... Trash talking metal yet u seem to knw something about the "community"
Ok good responses. For the record, August Burns Red is a great band that I have been listening to for a while as well. But the difference I see in regards to Lamb of God and clones are that the clones for the most part died off or did not really get popular, where as Lamb of God did because they were a flower among thorns in regards to everything else around them. Same with Devildriver, there are so many generic bands out there that sound so similar. But they are never as good. Just because there are countless generic clones does not mean the good ones should be tainted. As for the stereotype that has been suggested in regards to the phase type nature of the band, I can understand that. It is completely what Slipknot is associated with. However, I do not think LoG falls under the same banner. I have never been to a LoG show that the crowd was not mostly made up of 25-35 year old drunks. Which I admit is not much of a better association. But the teenager scene is much more interested in bands that are indie versions of Bring Me the Horizon and Suicide Silence. Either way I love the bands I love, I probably come across as though I have a need to defend LoG but I really do not. But this makes me wonder what the general opinion is of bands like Heaven Shall Burn or As I Lay Dying, not that anyone needs to go into it if I am just being annoying haha.
Yeah i think you should read my posts again before saying that I'm trash-talking metal and calling me a poser. I'm not trash talking metal at all. Read them again before trying to start shit, tough guy.
Yeah man if you like them than all the power to ya! I'll be honest I dont knoe everything about that band. I saw them once at this Sounds of the Underground, I have one of their records, but they never really captivated me personally. Doesnt mean they are a bad band though!
