Sometimes i think i would eat it - if it tasted good to me.

It never tasted good to me., so i don't. I could probably never kill an animal myself and use all the parts the way i would think it would be environmentally friendly and healthiest for me to eat meat anyway...

Fish especially,I often wish I enjoyed fish- so many health benefits and i can get locally caught wild fish EASILY out here.. and shellfish- but i might be mildly allergic to shellfish.
unfortunately, fish tastes like, well fish-and smells.I did take fish oil capsules when I was preggy and my daughter was just born, for omega fatty acids :)

I would think it has something to do with the population growth of humans on this planet for the last 3000 years versus the soils ability to constantly grow plant food products. If you're lucky enough to have a fertile flood plain then go ahead ... grow as mutch veggies as you want, but with a population of over 7 billion the humans of this planet still need to diversify ... depending on climate, soil, in what foods they eat.
In the east they knew a couple of thousand years ago that spreading animal manures on the soil enriched it ... in the west this didn't catch on until the middle ages and so then we were able to grow our food more plentifully where we previously were unable. Then in the 1900's we developed fertilisers like bonemeal and fish/blood/bone ect .... basically dried ground up animal carcasses ploughed into the soil, and then due to more population growth we developed chemical fertilisers. Do you like chemical fertilisers? Does the soil like chemical fertilisers?
As you can see, population is the problem here. In times past when the human population was very small, nature provided relatively easily. I understand that native peoples in the florida area and many other areas in the world enjoyed an abundance of natural veggie foods, ... nature was like a garden for them and they didn't need to even grow their food. The innuit indians in contrast and other peoples way up north and into the arctic couldn't really grow food at all and almost lived entirely on animal flesh whether it be fish, shellfish, seabirds or seals ect, supplemented by wild nuts and berries when they were in season. The nomadic herders of the steppes needed vast areas of rich pasture to maintain their herds to provide food (milk, cheese and meat) for relatively few. Naturally rich soil like floodplains and lowland areas enriched by natural watercourses that also have a suitable climate for agriculture are uncommon.
In short, growing enough food has always been a problem with larger population, mainly because the soil is depleted rapidly without some means of replenishing it with nutrients. Climate is also a huge issue but luckily today after hundreds of years of plant breeding we can select which crops we grow in particular environments and relatively arid soil can support at least some type of agriculture, but soil and fertilisers and climate remain an issue.
So there's a few reasons why we still eat meat.

the population/ best use of land is something that should e taken into account.
in the United States, and to a degree in Canada and Mexico, cattle are fed corn, a non natural food, that is a natural food for humans.
raising livestock (separate from hunting here, this is agriculture) in a temperate zone is an inefficient use of energy. We grow food to feed it to animals that have to use part of it themselves...and the weight and water balance is just whacked.

Agreed entirely regarding the common modern methods of factory farming cattle, should be avoided at all costs. Horrid what they do to those animals, raising them in abject misery and never stoping to think of just how all those toxic hormones these cow's build up turn around and affect our poulace as a whole But yet no one stops to think of why Cancer is so common or at least if they do think of it, they dont dare mention it, it would cost Industry massive Profit losses.

But in the case of free range Cattle which havent been brought up on Food grains but rather grasses and open pasture, not pumped constantly with growth hormone and antibiotics,,, not so bad imho.

Avoid fast food at all costs (Like thats a statement that needs to be made. lol)

But conversley, our Agricultural practices arent all that much better for the land or us with the neverending feed of pestecides and fertilizers used to support our nations Mono-cropping Industry and dont get me going on GMO produce, "We cant figure out what's causing Cancer to run thru our population like wildfire (What was it, like 1 in 4 people will have to deal with it?) but yet we feel confident enough to play God with our Crops on a genetic level" Modifying their DNA so as to force them into producing new forms of "natural" pestecides and be more resistant to various forms of disease, and taking it that horrid step further of being in a rush to pass it off onto the Worlds population where it will cross pollinate with traditional strains of Heirloom varieties!!! All in the name of Profit...

Well, I've got to go finish raking leaves for my compost pile, gonna have a nice garden come next year without pestecides or toxic fertilizers, all heirloom, goes well with the rest of my diet. :cheers2:

Have you ever tasted a carrot that was roasted with a pot roast. The carrot has a MUCH better flavor than a regular carrot.

Meat and veggies compliment each other.

A balanced diet contains meat, veggies, grains, milk, etc.

Ya' know thou, as much of a fan of a well cooked steak as I am, it does make me wonder if perhaps theres not some truth to the whole "assimilation of the soul / persona of the animal consumed" thing when weighed against the overwhelming herd mentality of society??

Mabey we should be eating Elephants so we never forget, or Chimps so we could all be clever monkeys?? Mabey thats where the Chinese got the idea for that one messed up "Delicacy" of theirs I wont mention here. Ick...

i would be a vegetarian, but a pack of hot dogs is something my family can afford and make last longer than carrots and some lettuce.

I've kinda always associate meat eating with a male thing from the caveman days.. Hunter/Gatherer... From what I have read.. the women were the gatherers, gathering vegitation, berries, nuts, ect, while the men hunted for game.. I think it stemmed from lack of vegitation in the winter, which force man to seek other means of sustanance... I think first humans watched what the other animals ate and when the animals were not eating, they ate the animals.. as 'other' animals ate each other.. probably for the same reason... It became 'natural' for man to eat meat.. As meat provides protien to keep the body strong, and it took so much vegetation to get the same ammount of protien and it was scarce, as the animals were eating it too... I'm from the Gatherer Tribe.. I like veggies, but I do eat a small ammount of meat as I cook for several men that are meat eaters.. but we free range our livestock and hunt and fish.. If I did not have to cook for meat eaters.. I would eat mostly veggie.. I would still eat fish and eggs and cheese...
