Keep in mind I read no other post on this thread because it´s just to long. In my opinion "hipies" have long hair because they generally are very connected to music and arts where others have long hair, now the question is why do artists have long hair ?? In my opinion, its because the life they live does not frown on "sloppy" looks so they have the freedom to look and akt more relaxed !!
Let's not fall into stereotypes. I agree long hair's cool, but some ''hippies'' can have short hair and some long haired guys can be hateful as hell. The real question would be why hippies have their hair the way they want it to be.
Take your choice: 1. cause haircuts cost money that can be better spent on better things. 2. I ain't lettin' anybody near my head with a sharp instrument!!! 3. It looks better long 4. Do you know any hippie that wants to look like a "office guru"? 5. it's my dam hair, I'll wear it how I want! 6. life is to short to waste any of it in a barber shop. Everyone has their own personal reason for either growing or cutting their own hair. I like mine long.
The whole thing about long hair on men started with the Beatles. If you check out pictures of the early Beatles, believe it or not that was considered to be long hair, and it caused quite a stir. Gradually hair got longer and longer, especially with the hippies who always loved causing a stir.
It is just amazing how many of these "experts" on hippies are like..14 or 15. Prodigies! They seem to know so much more than anyone about what those days were like..the reasons for everything. They've figured out that what you look like and how you dress is what determines how hip you are. Having long hair makes you more artistic, noble, smart, and able to preach to anyone about coolness. Short haired people are only worthy of feeding and supporting the prodigies. After all, short haired people waste money for haircuts..money that could be used to buy rolling papers. I know I'm going to just forget everything and let them tell me what to do now..because they know so much more..they understand that being a hippie was totally about the length of your hair and how many drugs you could do..they see that those people that actually lived the life but had long hair before and don't now were really not real hippies after all, because they now have short hair. The thinking of these precocious ones hasn't been corrupted by having to go out to make a living or raising children or living on their own to actually experience the world....they undoubtedly speak from pure understanding. Oh, this has been such an awakening...the feeling of being so humbled by their superior wisdom and understanding is so intense..what's this...I need to vomit. Am I straight-laced? No. I'm middle aged, and don't have to justify myself..anymore. (especially to a bunch of superficial children that just "don't get it")
I'd have to agree with you there, these prodigies offer so much wisdom that my head almost exploded. My head with gross short hair, because I just recently got a haircut after five years of not even a trim. Obviously, I am no longer hip in any way, shape, or form. That whole lifestyle disappeared with the snip of the braid.
100% genuine short-haired middle-aged dude sarcasm....except the last remark. What I'm saying is: Long hair..short hair..it's all good. Many hippies had/have short hair too..get used to it. It's not just about the hair. (or the drugs, or the clothes) When somone says that having short hair automatically makes you straight-laced, conformist, or a red-neck,.... it just shows that they are speaking out of ignorance.
it was a middle finger to the middle class, it was spoiled teenagers and young adults casting off the expectations of their parents, saying emphatically, I DONT WANT THE WORLD YOU MADE FOR ME. Not too much different than the first punk rockers, but like the punks, it became fashion and you werent a hip rebel without that long main.
