Seems a lot of men (and women) start off "assuming" they're straight then discover later on what their true preference is.. I know both a gay guy and a girl (colleague) and this is what both of their stories are..

actually to develop the topic I bet there is really a spectrum where you will find 100% straight to 100% gay and in between bi-sexual and then those who have dabbled, have some interest, toy with the idea, sexually open and adventurous..

I never chose to support my football club either - it just was..

Certainly, saying people "become" gay, is implying that being gay is a choice. Which I think, for the vast majority of gay people at least, is nonsense. I think the only choice gay people have, is whether to be open about their same sex attractions, or to stay in the closet. But I don't think anyone chooses to be attracted to members of their own sex, they just are. Nobody can choose what they are attracted to, and that includes gay people.

i didn't even choose my taste in music, not to mention taste in sexual partners. it's all just there on its own. whether we're talking about music, food, sex, interests...i didn't choose any of it. which is interesting, that you like some things but not others, and yet you don't choose to like a single thing in your life. you either do or you don't.

Partially true but I want to disagree about some things. Music, for instance.
I grew up in a household where I heard nothing but classical music. The first time I heard Rock & Roll I was horrified but I thought if so many people got off on it there must be something in it so I persisted and learnt to love it - well not early white trash rock which I still hate.
As to what made me 'turn gay'. I always was attracted to men, even as a pre-teen, had a few affairs with women along the way but, hey, they haven't got cocks and invariably indulge in a form of emotional blackmail I won't put up with.
As to people who ask ' Why did you choose to be gay' I suspect they're un-consciously telling us they have desires in that direction but because of social preasure etc they choose not to act on those urges ending up spending a lifetime in a state of quite despiration and denial.

Try and tell that to the Baptist Church's off-shoot 'Endevour' who believe they can cure gays with prayer and clean living. They have a horrendous record of their victims committing suicide having decided they're still gay because 'God doesn't love me'. Stay well away.

In that Bill Maher movie Religulous there is a religious person saying "Gays choose to be gay, there's no gay gene that has been discovered."

It then skips to scene inside a laboratory in which a doctor exclaims, "yes this is the gay gene."

Im not gay so I wouldn't know, but my brother is and he says hes known all his life.

I think everybody is born gay. It either percolates through a persons mind or does not. This is down to environment/experience. Most people conform to social norms and become heterosexual. This is not the case with some others. They allow their feelings to form feeling towards another sex that is not the norm. In time they become what we describe as 'gay'.

It's when white boys started to dilute and pretty up the blues. Tastless, tuneless fools like Bill Haley & The Comets et al.

I'd completely agree with that, I didn't choose my taste in food or music either. Some foods make me feel physically sick, but I didn't choose for those foods to make me sick, they just do. Same thing with music. I don't think I had any choice over my musical preferences, they just happened naturally. Especially as I got into the music I do like on my own. Unlike some young people who do choose to like a certain type of music to fit in with peers, or because it's seen as "cool". lol

Of course I'd stay well away, I'm not gay... lol

I definitely do not believe that gay people can be "cured". And I firmly believe that anyone who claims to have been cured by these religious ex-gay therapies, have simply gone into the closet. You can choose who to sleep/have relationships with, but you cannot choose who you are attracted to. And these so-called "ex-gays" are no more capable of choosing who they're attracted to than the rest of us are. Straight or gay.
