The Allman Brothers is a solid answer for this thread. I was thinking about saying them, but didn't because I mainly associate them with hippies who live in multi million dollar mansions.
gotta say the Grateful Dead. They were sort of in the vortex of the entire movement at Haight Ashbury and kept it moving for 3 decades. Jefferson Airplane deserves a lot of credit too for all their efforts. I'm very partial to the Doors, But i just don't see Jim Morrison as a hippy, he was just a brilliant poet who happened to surface in LA during at a time when hippies sort of ruled the west coast's music culture. I think he fit in better with warhol's crowd. Their music was certainly psychedelic, but by no means did it reflect the peace and love of hippy culture. The Beatles were outstanding as well, they made incredible music. Janis and Jimmy were both great, and i don't believe that chene would have been complete if you took out any one of them. But The Grateful Dead was probably my favorite. and characterized the movement most significantly
i think its been decided as grateful dead but i like to think that the doors and the beatles are up there too
