There is something to be said of being first at something. Everyone remember Orville and Wilbur Wright. Don't know the name of the 3rd person to fly an airplane.
Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, etc. may not have been the first musicans. They stand out because they expanded their fields to fresh directions and uncharted courses; while doing it better than anyone else at that time.
Another characteristic seems to be they successfully manage to keep changing over the years. The first couple of Beatles Albums are primitve when compared with their final years( or even their middle stages). As if they able to apply what they learned throughout their careers.
The Stones may have been good (Brown Sugar, etc), but they really hadn't changed music much to be remembered. Its as if they followed current trends rather influence them.

    ARTIST: Zager and Evans
    TITLE: In the Year 2525

    In the year 2525
    If man is still alive.
If woman can survive, they may find.

    In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies.
Everything you think, do and say, is in the pill you took today.

    In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes.
You won't find a thing to chew.
    Nobody's gonna look at you.

    In the year 5555
Your arms hanging limp at your sides.
Your legs got nothing to do.
Some machine doing that for you.

    In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife.
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too.
From the bottom of a long glass tube. Whoa-oh

    In the year 7510
If God's a-comin, he oughta make it by then.
Maybe he'll look around himself and say.
Guess it's time for the judgment day.

    In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head.
He'll either say.I'm pleased where man has been.
Or tear it down and start again. Whoa-oh

    In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin if man is gonna be alive.
He's taken everything this old Earth can give.
And he ain't put back nothing.Whoa-oh

Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears.
    For what he never knew,
    now man's reign is through.

    But through eternal night.
    The twinkling of starlight.
    So very far away.
    Maybe it's only yesterday.

    In the year 2525
    If man is still alive.
If woman can survive, they may find.

    In the year 3535 {fade}

I un..concur. Have you even listened to Iron Butterfly outside of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"? And you enjoy Tommy James and the Shondells? I don't know...I liked them the first time around. But after a few more turns on the record player I couldn't help but hurl the Goddamn piece of plastic against the wall. Crimson and Clover wasn't bad or anything; it just got really annoying after about a week.

The Mothers. They win this hands down.

It was the whole record...and I play things over and over to get a feel for what I'm listening to...

I meant the Mothers of Invention (headed by Zappa), but that's okay...:p

i have a question for you did see the woodstock concert of 1969 in dvd or the original uncut VHS "some nudity here" ? and if you did what kind of impresion it left on you? or do you have to wait until your older for your parents to let you watch it...........this is a bit off topic but not way off.

i know nobody will even know this band, much less agree with me, but in my opinion 'slint' is one of the greatest bands in the world.

they were very short lived, only lasting from about 1988 - 1991, but the music they created was so original and influential. really groundbreaking, for their time.
