You're right. The drummers who play the most complex time signatures are playing jazz, not rock simply because rock's time signatures tend to be simple and repetitive. Of course there are exceptions like Jaki Liebezeit or Bill Bruford or Greg Lake, or Ginger Baker, or Carter Beauford, but except for these few, if you are looking for the really good drumming masters you have to look for jazz bands. It takes a really good drummer to be able to sustain the rythm structure of bands like the Miles Davis Electric Ensemble (Jack DeJohnette), or Return to Forever (Lenny White) or Mahavishnu Orchestra (Billy Cobham).
Throwin' props to MICK FLEETWOOD of the mac cause he drums soooo musically. THIS FARGIN THREAD SHOULD A BEEN LOCKED AFTER LUCIFER SAME SAID KEITH "THE LOON" MOON WAS SAID THE FIST TIME!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, Led Zeppelin had a variety of deceptive time signatures, the time signature isnt stressed though in the songs. My vote still goes to Bohnam, if not for his bass drum ability. His right foot is amazing,(listen to good times bad times) and was admired by even jazz drummers. He completly changed the way rock drummers played, he was a pioneer of the rock genre, something that very few jazz drummers can claim in there own genre. While the jazz drummers are good and some that have been mentioned are amazing, I even have to concede to Bohnam (I began as a schooled jazz drummer). Buddy rich is god but its his solos that make it. Jack, Lenny and Billy, are all amazing in what they do. Terry Bozzio is a fucking anomaly(sp?) I swear aliens brought him here....but John Bohnam crafted parts around Led Zeppelin and made the songs amazing, and his groove is impenetrable.....impenetrable.
Of course, Zeppelin was a groundbreaking band and all of its members are among the best in their respective instruments. I specially admire Jimmy Page's guitar playing. But if I'd have to choose my favorite rock drummer, it would still be a tie between Liebezeit and Bruford. Just listen to any song in Can's Ege Bamyasi or in King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic. That's the problem with trying to choose a "best" drummer, or any "best" instrumentalist. All the guys mentioned in these posts are very, very good, and each of them has a unique way of playing. This makes comparisons really difficult. By the way, is that your drumset in your sig? Great stuff.
stanton moore! he is the man! I'm surprised I haven't scene any other mention of him (unless I missed it)
every danny carey beat is something awesome. nick mason. the same. he's a well built machine if you ask me. that's just crazy, especially on one of these days. holy hell have you ever seen live in pompei? joey jordison plays so fast. all over the set. that alone is incredible. but he adds his set of style to it as rough as that is. so i'd have to go with those three. on my list.
Stewart Copeland is fantastic. I also really like Shannon Larkin, the way his arms flail around as he's playing is cool as shit.
MITCH MITCHELL from the Hendrix Experience is just so near of the top . But for the very first place i just can't decide between the animal pulsion of KEITH MOON (the Who) or the tribal rythmn of GINGER BAKER (Cream)!
1)yeah you're right but the Mahavishnu orchestra was a rock jazz band or a jazz rock band? 2)...and the Drummer out of ELP is Palmer (this band his a nightmares! in the xeption of a few songs in the early seventies...but it was mainly a bad trip for me) 3)there's nothing to compare rock with jazz drummers...in rock i'm ok it's more repetitive...but i don't think that all jazz drummer can't play with the same basic pulsion of life...'cause the sounds of a rock drum his all'bout pulsion...the hard life of human conditions(look at Keith Moon or Dave Grohl)...this is rock n roll...some of them play drums like animals damned by god and condamned to get back to earth...this is rock. the jazz is more technic and "stylise"...it's more cerebral(? is it the right word,i'm not so sure)...but for sure not this is not the play of a neanderthal man...
Of course it was Carl Palmer. What was I thinking!!! I must've been on drugs . And ELP was a cheesy, self-admiring, pretentious band, and I hate most of their music, bur Palmer was one of the greatest drummers out there.
Every one is going to hate me for this but I think Lars is a Joke as a drummer and an ass clown in general. Case in point- St.Anger. Black album is ok, but his drumming is hardly spectacular.
awesome! I completely agree with you there. He's a horrible drummer, and is only mentioned here because he was in metallica. Everyone is going to hate me for that. HAHA... Vinnie Paul, Ginger Baker, and Donald Tardy... if I didn;t post that before I dont know im stoned
...that Stewart Copeland only got one mention. He's got a really interesting style. My favorite drummer is my friend Spencer, and I mean that absolutely sincerely. He's the best fucking drummer I've ever seen. He manages to sound like Stewart Copeland and Carter Beauford at the same time, but he keeps himself a little more...reined in, than those two. He's a little less...extravagant. Like, "I know I can play that shit. Why do I need to show off?" Fucking awesome drummer.
