Mrsmorrison27-- The cows would not die if we did not milk them. This is a common misbelief. (My grandmother said the same thing the other day.)
When an animal is not milked, it begins to stop lactating. If it is continued to be milked, it continues lactating. The reason they begin lactating anyway, is either because they have given birth or they have been given hormones. If they have given birth, the calf would naturally nurse from its mother, and when it weans off breastfeeding, the lactation will terminate. In farm factories, the calves do not breastfeed for the natural amount of time that they would in nature. Instead, they are butchered as veal. This is why there is extra milk.

A simple way to view it is based on the fact that all mammal lactation patterns are similar. You do not have to be "milked" daily, unless you've just given birth- and in that case, your infant will take care of things, not a farmer!

Hope that clears things up! :)

I've never made a concious decision to be vegetarian...but my diet is prolly 90% sans-meat...

tis just easier, meat is too much hassle (and expensive) to be bothering with when yer live alone......and the garden is bursting with free veggie grub :D

I love alot of vegetarian food, but I'm not vegetarian..(i think i love kebabs too much!) My mum is though. She decided to go veggo a couple of years ago when she started hearing more about how the animals were treated beforehand, and one day just stopped eating meat because she said she didnt want to support cruelty by buying meat products and hasnt eaten it since, in fact shes thinking about going vegan!

Omnivore! Truth be told though it's mostly chicken & seafood these days. The Hunzas who are some of the longest lived folk around say that although most of their neighbors were Buddist and veggie the Hunzas who were Taoist had found in their experience that when a hard winter came and they had to eat the goats and horses the systems of the veggies rejected the animal protien and they starved to death. My ex who is Uzbecki from the same high mountains concurs.

full agreement with RANGER... i've been a veggie all my life and eat no dairy... a friend cooked me a meal that contained animal protien and for a couple of days i thought i was dying....without a doubt if you've never eaten meat your system cant handle it...

actualy. i beleive this is false, after thousandsof years of continuos milking, the cows today do not natuaruly stop lactating the way they should, they get very ill when they stop being milked i'm not sure if its from selective breeding or if they just lost that ability to naturaly adjust, but domestcated cows could never be re-naturalized because farming techniques have altered the species enough that they are dependant on constant milking...sad isnt it?

I'm vegan. Started off as vegetarian and then to vegan about 6months ago. I just slowly cut out meat, dairy and eggs gradually....
