apparently your age/lack of pit bull doesn't shield you from being as weak-minded as a 14-year-old :D

I know you weren't asking me, but the answer is that you don't have to/your question doesn't make any sense. ALL dogs should be socialized at a young age to avoid human focused aggression. Perhaps you think that pit bulls have some kind of "mean gene" or "killer DNA," but it's simply not true.

Yeah, it really is true. They were bred for that gene and anyone who thinks that all dogs are born equal are just in denial.

Yeah, many are sweethearts, but even sweethearts turn sometimes.

Yeah, ours is generally a sweetheart, but I feel like she is resisting all of her natural impulses. Like she is forcing herself to not be aggressive. I've never felt that with my other dogs they just naturally were not aggressive to people or other animals.

They are a breed of dog, not a top secret government funded genetically altered super-solider with an isolated "strait murder and some gangsta shit yall" gene.

I would take a pit bull over many people! The dog is at least trainable. :)

There is no breed that is a killer, but there are many stupid owners who have dogs that are all breeds. :( They are not toys and they need to be trained and socialized. The time and effort that the owner puts in, is the dog they will have in the end.

My sister has been a breeder of Chinese Sharpei and Miniature Dachshunds for over 20 years and in all that time she has not had a dog she had to destroy for personality. There have been a few returned as per her contract (if the person who purchased the dog does not wish to keep it,they sign a contract that they will return it to her for placement) she has had a few former owners that should have been kennelled. :(

The dogs were re-socialized and placed in new homes and amazingly they did not have behaviour problems anymore.

I find it troubling that the posters in this thread that don't trust pit bulls , or any other breed of dog for that matter, blame the animal and not it's handler. It's like blaming a child for poor behavior instead of placing the blame where it belongs, on the parents and their lack of parenting skills. The biggest problem I see with both children and dogs is a lack of exercise. Dogs were bred to travel miles and miles each day and most americans think a walk of a mile or 2 ( if any) is sufficient. Ideally, a dog should be run. I use a bicycle to run mine as I have bad knees. The difference in behavior of a dominant or aggressive dog after a 5 or 6 mile run is remarkable. It's always easier to blame the animal, but it ultimately the owner's responsibility. If you aren't a strong enough leader to provide the dog what it requires, contact a rescue group for assistance in placement with a competent handler. And then don't get another dog, it only adds to negative dog breed stereotypes.

Where I live the law states they must have a leak free, insulated dog house and constant access to water. The situation you describe is neglect in my opinion but may not be by your towns' laws. We have very dedicated cruelty investigators where I live who won't hesitate to seize an animal that is neglected or abused. They also feel the laws need to be expanded as they have in more progressive areas to prohibit being chained 24/7. As to what I think of the owners of said dog, probably the same as you do Orison, They're lower than the parasites crawling in the feces they make their dog live in. If you make that video send it to your local TV station and hopefully someone will be shamed into doing something about it. Sometimes around here dogs like that are taken by concerned citizens and sometimes the owners don't even realize it for a couple days.:D

that's sickening. there was this one rott behind my husband's old job who was left chained in the back yard on concrete straight through summer and winter. it was new mexico, man, very cold and very hot, very dry and miserable. sweetest damned dog, too. would wag it's behind and play catch with dave and generally loved ANY attention it got.

    You'll make a video later???

Apparently animal control aren't the only ones who don't give a fuck.

As for the owners, ANYONE (wether they own the dog, or they own a video camera), who would knowingly leave an animal in such a condition as you describe should be tied up and left in the same condition for a couple of months.
