I'd also like to add that exerting dominance over any dog, does not translate to abusing them physically or mentally. Strong physical presence/force can be used in the right context, but only to the degree of showing the dog they can't overpower you in any way. I think that when it comes to any dog, a person is either a "dog person" or not. They get it or they don't.

And if you don't get it, you are going to end up hating your environment and having a fucked up, out of control animal. This is basically unfair for a dog to live like this. Now factor in certain powerful and instinctual breeds, and it can become a safety liability for others.

But still, responsibility for a situation like that lies with the human.

Theres a book.. The Dog Who Spoke With Gods. If you have issues with pitbulls, I say read this book. It will change your mind completely. This is part of the afterword. The lady is an expert on the bulldog breed.

.....Some themes, however, run throughout all my dogs and bulldogs in general; they are highly driven, strongly motivated dogs that adore people but are ever ready to test their mettle against other dogs. Like any working breed, they are not always the best choice for the fist time or casual dog owner. to treat these dogs without respect for their genetic purpose is to do them huge disservice. Far to many people, many well intentioned, ump into pit bull ownership without doing adequate research into the needs of these dogs. Because of this, the breed has been reduced in stature from a once proud symbol of courage and spirit to having its very name synonymous with treacherous viciousness. Nothing could be further from the truth. Or sadder.

Happy, intelligent, rugged and playful, the pit bull offers its human compainion the very best that the canine race has to offer in return for siple understanding and resposible ownership. they are possessed of a willing and sensitive nature, and cruel methods of training, such as the electreic schock collar, are particularly unnecessary with these dogs. If you are interested in learning more about this breed, pelase do so before you consider adding a pit bull to your family.....

I don't know who said that making a dog submissive to everyone is breaking their spirit, but I agree. Dogs should actually not associate with animals and people outside of their pack. I'm not saying that your dog should attack others. What I'm saying is that they should be indifferent to other dogs and people. They should not look to them for praise, command, fun or anything else. That is what you supply your dog. You are the pack leader.
