    Uhm..
    Steve Hackett
Franco Mussida (from italian group PFM)
    ...
    Mark Knopfler
    Ritchie Blackmore..
    ...
They represent different guitar styles, but they're the greatest!

I like Jerry Garcia and Jorma Kaukonen's style a lot. But I don't know shit about the technicalities of playing the guitar so I can only judge on how much I like their style.

I love Link Wray's guitarsound! He's not the greatest maybe, but he sure know how to rock. That guitar in The fuzz and I'm branded are just fantastic :D

Well this is a complicated mater, of course, or not at all...
It all depends on your definitions and standards and qualifications,
It aether makes it a very relative and or personal story, or a very emotionless sheet of characteristics.

you can look at places in history and find pioneers originators, (Link Wray, with his Distorted Fuzz sound, wich came about by puncing holes in his speaker cabin with at knife or screw driver, and this was in the 50's, truely and father of rock'n roll!)
and there are innovators (jimi Hendrix, Who took what Robbie krieger was doing on When the music's over, and took what Jeff Beck was doing with the yardbirds (which spawned the holy guitar triangle Clapton, Page Beck), Who took Eric Claptons marshal stacks(who took Pete Townsend's 100W stack) this could go on a while...
And then we keep coming back to The Who...
Metal? Do any of those metal heads know where the grunt comes from?
It Was john Entwistle who laid down the first grunt on Boris the Spider somewhere in 1966 (Proof me wrong, i dare you, find me an ealyer recorded case :))
But this is all about Rock in general, back to the guitar players.
    Yes gilmour, Blackmore, Page, Beck.
And then there's guys like Vai en ygwyyyn, can you place that next to BB King of John Lee Hooker and even start sizing them up?
We all have guitar heroes, but what do your heroes listen too? check that out, see where they are coming from.
It stuff like the Ventures, the shadows, and Chuck Berry ofcourse...but it goes on and on...

What is it the greatest guitar player does?
I asure you there are 14 year old music students who can do things with there intruments that would have David Gilmoure and Mark Knopfler scratching ther {insert funny remarks here if need be} heads.

So it's all relative, The greatest Guitar player in the world could be the kid rocking around the corner, or the session player laying down the solo on you fav song, maybe rotting away in some undiscovered corner of the record store, of some forgotten Myspace... One thing is for sure, the greatest guitar player is playing NOW, because this title is always shifting, and all the people mentioned and not mentioned in this thread have had en time or (s)p(l)ace there they where, just that...at that moment where the hit That Note...

For me personally Mark Knopfler is a (my) Guitar god, that meaning that ever since i was 6 years old and I first heard the Dire Staits i knew i wanted to play guitar,
en yes in 1992 Mark Knopfler was the greatest, for awhile, but before and after that allot of things happened, this what also the Guns 'n roses/nirvana era mind you, not to mention what was going on in the corner of Dream Theater and Pantera and stuff like that. But especially with the things Mark is doing now a days, this, very soft, slow, country folk thing, it impossible for my to call him the greatest Today, but i still love 'm and go to his love shows, But what Pete Townshend did in 2001 (at age 55 i believe) was show the world what All The Fuzz was about regarding Rock 'n Roll, Feedback, Stratocasters, Life, Revolution, innovation, inspiration, Improvisation, transpiration, and transmogrification (Magic bus get transformed into a train).
Yes, now go and buy The Who Live at the royal albert hall on DVD! and see and hear what i'm talkin about...

Is this making anysence at all?

Pick one, there all great in there moments.
Eric Clapton even named one of his "There's One In Every Crowd" album for occasions like this...
The title would originally be "The Best Guitarist In The World - There's One In Every Crowd" as an answer from Clapton to the ones who insisted on saying he was "God", but he took the first part off so it could be seen as "Eric Clapton - There's One In Every Crowd".

And uhm What about Jan Akkerman? Alvin Lee...
But does it have to be a mega star? check out your local pub, who knows... maybe you might came across the createst Guitar player in the world at that moment. heh...

You're right, it's all very personal. There isn't a greatest guitarplayer. Personally I can't stand Satriani and generally Yngwie Malmsteen neither. But I can hear they know their stuff. I rather have a raspy blues guitar sound, or the fuzzy distorted sounds of the 'hard rock' sounds of bands like Black Sabbath. And sometimes nothing can beat a good accoustic guitar of a band like the Pentangle or Davey Graham. So for me it's Blackmore, just of what and how he did it, and Hendrix. But in the end it doesn't matter at all ;)

Jimmy Page has the most talent but I like to listen to David Gilmour with his unique sound.

I think John Fogerty, Robbie Krieger, Alvin Lee and Steve Marriot should be on the list somewhere. It doesn't really suprise me to see the names Hendrix, Page and Clapton on here.
