I have a thought/statement about this one ... rather than use a specific year ... wouldn't it be more prudent to use an age range? I mean, the young are getting older and they would fit in the Old category soon enough. Unless this is only about the Hippies of a specific time period, and not just about Old Hippies ... assuming of course that the Hippy movement is not dead !!! Darrell Edit: Oops ... and if a specific time period Hippy is the official word, then wouldn't that be "before" rather than "after" 1960 ???
Whew!!! i just squeaked by...I'm 46. Should it read "this Thread" as opposed to "this post"?? UMMM...Number one..in the second field .... anyone born BEFORE 1960??? yes, I know they are just examples...in the second field..lol But Meagain....yay!!! Thank you for doing this....{{{{{MEAGAIN}}}} Man, one more reason to be glad I'm 46(I think), I'm an Old Hippie....???
WE1, the word you are trying to use is patience.Patients are found in hospital beds. I am the first to admit I sometimes make typos and will correct if I see it post submitted. On the whole though, in hip forums most posts are well written. Those that are not usually have poor spelling and grammar and come from same person.
HAHA....I think our sweet WE knows all about the ones found in hospital beds!!! He probably has the word "patients" on his mind so much, it just pops out, especially when he loses "patience"...
Here's some interesting posts I found today while rummaging through the past 28 pages of Old Hippies forum. There's a format to this ... it goes something like: Thread name (posts)(views) * indicates this is not the thread name, but a question within the thread _____________________________________________________________ Is hippy a form or religion? (47)(555) How old is a old hippie? (13)(186) How Old Do You Have To Be (34)(529) Am I an Old Hippy? (21)(307) What do original hippies think of younger ones? (40)(1183) Your advice to the younger generation (28)(563) Can you be a hippie if you don't dress like one * (22)(335) How do you know when you're an actual hippie? (25)(547) How can I be a hippy? (35)(537) a question that needs to be asked:"what makes a hippie acording to your opinion?" (18)(177) How did you survive all these years, and still stay hip and true? * (42)(728) _____________________________________________________________ In two of the threads I added the question rather than the thread name because the name was more like ... Question for the Old Hippies, or thereabouts. Darrell
My god that's alot of info to wade through! What monster are we contemplating here?! LOL I have visions of trying to assemble endless answers from 15,000 people into 3 or 4 meaningful handy dandy cosmic words of wisdom...oooh my head hurts already.......
That's the beauty of it, Meagain ... you don't have to compile some of these answers to questions. Just create the question then post a link to the thread where it's already discussed. It may also be that one question will host several links to threads relating to the same question ... kinda like I did when I separated the questions into separate groups (see above), only these can be the actual links (not like I did them, anchoring an http address to the thread name). It may be that these threads will continue to bounce around once in a while rather than float to the bottom to make it to the next archive. It's something called "reinventing the wheel" ... why do it? My head hurt too just imagining you sorting through all those links to find relevant responses to compile into a single answer ... and my head is still swimming like dizzy ... ooohhhhhhhhh, the p.a.i.n. (^_^) Darrell
Example: DISCLAIMER: What I'm posting below is for example only. It may not be what a true hippie is, and if I did mention anything relating to hippies, it was just out a want to find anything to say to make this example an example. What is a Hippy? A Hippy is anyone who holds dear the ideas and ideals set forth by the hippies of the mid-60's to the late-70's, opposition to war, stand-up for the rights and freedom of others, anti-establishment, communal, blah, blah, blah ... Links to threads in the Old Hippies Forum relating to this question: Can you be a hippie if you don't dress like one How do you know when you're an actual hippie? How can I be a hippy?
Since Meagain has installed the Old Hippies FAQ thread, I'm gonna unsticky this one. Everyone please provide your input and lets get this show on the road. Thank you all for your participation in this thread. Darrell
Guy's..... I don't wanna BURST YOUR BUBBLE. I realy, Honestly DON'T! But..... Mods? Admins? WHO really reads the FAQ? They only read it IF folk like us can give LINKS to the actual FAQ.
Hiya, Just today I discovered this forum, and posted a question on one of the other subforums here. Now I discover this one, the old hippie forum and I realize that this is the place to post my question. Just for the record, I am not one of the real old hippies, but thank god, also not a young one... (yeah, i read the thread a bit...) Living in Holland, born in 60, I sort of missed the real hippie wave, but I always felt it in my blood. Now I am busy with making one of my dreams come true, writing a book, and a couple of chapters take place in San Francisco 1967, as a kind of, how do you say that in good english, in memoriam, only that SF isnt dead... argh.. language... Helas, science isnt ready with the time machine, that I ordered, to be send back to the summer of love, so I better try it here. I already got some tips on books I can read, but I would also love to hear from real survivers: how was it in San Francisco? what did it feel like? what did you smell in the streets, how was the weather, how good/true was the free love? How was the food, what did you eat? ... stuff like that. I am like a sponge, taking everything in that i read, specially sensory information, like colours, smells, sounds, taste, touch?? I wouldnt dare asking of you to write pages with memories, but as I read in one of the threads, you guys love to look back?..so perhaps someone can share a memory of two?? Thanks a lot in advance (again, dont know if that is good english). Love and peace and a lot of good (free drugs) vibes from Holland Katchoo
Matt, Apparently you may be right as only 24 people have viewed the Faqs and only 1, a mod, answered the only question, posted by another mod! Ain't life great! So, if it doesn't fly we'll junk it and try somethin' else, what the hey. katchoo, Try the Flashback Forum right above this one. But I will say, even though I never made it to SF I did notice a particular smell in the air around my area. ...And the only reason we love to look back is that we're afraid something is catching up...we're getting slower don't you know.
I'm a big fan of FAQs. I think they are one of the best things about the web. And the ones within the Philosophy and Religion are some of the best I've ever seen. But a generalized FAQ about hippies, I was afraid wouldn't work. It's too hard to even come up with a list of frequently asked questions. It was worth a try. Hat's off and big, many thanks to Darrel and "Meagain" for the work done and caring enough to do it. I don't think that too many questions is the problem. The problems seem to be with activity and with folks getting mad/feelings hurt and leaving. As far as activity goes, I fully agree with what "Freesue" said: "I think we all go through "dry" periods where we are more reader's than posters." Plus there isn't (and realistically can't be) always something that is of interest. But, when there is, well look at the number of posts and views for this thread. As to folks leaving, in a forum(or anything else) with 18,929 members it is going to happen. There's no way to prevent it, you can't please all the people all the time. As to folks getting mad/feelings hurt, of course in a group this size, that's going to happen too. It can be kept to a minimum, if the problem is known. I looked back over this thread and saw few complaints, and a the Private forums should be able to handle most of those. I wish that some of those folks who got mad and left could be persuaded to come back for one more post and let everyone know what made them so mad. Then if there is a pattern, corrective action can be taken. Once again, this is just this old hippie's opinion. And I'm not having an emotional meltdown this time, did last time .... Peace, poor_old_dad
I'm a FAN of the FAQ myself, Dad. On my forums, I BUST MY BUTT to be sure they are up to date. It's just that people today, want FAST answers. Nobody takes the time to read the instructions anymore. I'll visit the FAQ and answer what I can...
I'm gonna be gone till 18 April on a meditation retreat. In a round-about way, I've asked Meagain to look in on this forum while I'm gone. He probably does anyway ... but if you have any questions, problems or such you can contact him via PMs. Hope to see you all again then ... I'm really kinda nervous, and excited both. This is my first encounter with Theravada Monks and their form of meditation. I understand this is the meditation technique Gotama used when he became Enlightened and became the Buddha. Later ... in Metta ... Darrell
