I love this post as well. Shows that hippies doesn't necessarily feel like the bullied underdog or a member of a group who shows no acceptance for the people who aren't 'hippie' (so much for tolerance huh) and make fun of their groupclichés, and also shows that a hippie can be more then overly naive and longing for some vague kind of revolution. :)

Back then we had the draft and guys were getting shipped off to southeast asia to fight in a war that wasn't popular. We were being fed the crap that if we lose vietnam, cambodia and loas to the chinese, it would be no time before the world would be overran by communism.

Guys didn't have any choice. We were drafted and had to go to war. Hippies came to be because we were fed up with what 'the man' was feeding us on a daily basis. We just didn'T want to hear it anymore so we tuned out.

I agree with you guys. There are hip folks everywhere, they just don't call themselves hippies. [IMG]

This thread reminds me of a Timothy Leary quote I saw once...

"Hippy is an establishment label for a profound, invisible, underground, evolutionary process. For every visible hippy, barefoot, beflowered, beaded, there are a thousand invisible members of the turned-on underground. Persons whose lives are tuned in to their inner vision, who are dropping out of the TV comedy of American Life."

very good point. more people need to vote, more people need to travel and get a feel of other cultures so tolerance is more realistic instead of "oh, well whatever they're weird i'll just iggnore it." more people need to realize that happiness does not reside in materiallistic things. And people need to find themselves and be comfortable with themselves.

    okay im done ranting.=)

too late for a revolution. get our heads broken for nothing. the man's got it all.
too early for a revolution? it just doesn't seem necessary right now. wait a couple years.
get more hippies, make'em trip. make'em fly. show'em the freaking world.
smoke a joint with my dad. get social power.

Where have all the flowers gone?
    Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
    Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
    When will they ever learn?
    When will they ever learn?

the old hippies didn't leave, they did went anywhere. they just die. like you and me in 30 years. wake up. wake up.
    make new hippies?
    SHOW'EM HOW TO FUCKING FLY.

If this was the 70s, there would be thousands of us on the mall in D.C. protesting the war. The ideology of hippy might still be around, but you (the 'new' hippies) sure have changed.

When a president can just go off and make up facts and send our brothers and sisters into war to die and to be mammed for life and we sit back and don't do a thing about it. You're not hippies. Sit back and smoke ur joints and get high on x or whatever, but don't dishonor those who are hippies by calling yourself one.

In the netherlands its easy to find the hippies. Check the larger festivals of ruigoord and you'll see quite a few there. Old hippies, young hippies and even little hippie children with dreadlocks.
Actually the gouverment is destroying ruigoord right now, they're building a ship port thing right next to it. It just to be a village squatted by artists and hippies in the early 70's; with a huge nature area behind it. My mother had a horse on it when I was young, and we used to go there a few times a week. Now even the festivals might not be able to beh old there because the world heared about ruigoord too much; they're forced to confirm to the laws. No more free/cheap festivals on ruigoord, if any at all int he future.
But for now.. its still a plce with hippies. And theres probably a lot m ore that aren't there.

Good Post Chuck-I've been wondering the same thing-This president has been able to pull off more lies and deception then even Nixon or Reagan did- Yet the country sits quietly by and lets this administration bug our telephones and open up secret prisons in foreign countrys so we can tortore prisoners!
I see people not speaking up about the freedom of speech being kicked under the rug-Are people really that scared to speak up?Its our country-not he people in DC or Halliburton-but ours-and it's being stolen.Even forums are choosing what they think people need to read about and are deleting the rest-welcome to 1984-Big Brother is here!
