I don't even have my dreads on the outside yet, and I still can't find a job! FT Student, last year of HS. Currently looking for a nonexistent job, but I applied at an Organic Supermarket the otherday and hopefully I get the job! :)

I work the front desk at a fitness club and, until yesterday (end of the season), doing skate rental, ice patrol, and sharpening at an outdoor holiday ice rink.

At the club I wore my hair in a ponytail for my interview and for the first couple weeks, but my manager has never said anything to me about my locks. Once he introduced me to one of his fellow GMs from another location, and the guy said, "I remember your hair because I was sitting behind you at the sales training" to which my manager responded "It's kind of his thing" which made me crack up. Even people who are cool with it still don't get it...

At the rink, on my first day, they asked me to wear my hair up. I just went along with it at first, but then I brought it up with an assistant manager that I'm friendly with. I told her that I thought it was lame that the head manager didn't say something to me about it during the pre-season orientation/meet-and-greet. Then it comes out that it's not because of my locks, it's because my hair is long. However I was the only male with long hair working there so who knows? At first I would either wear them up or hide them in a tam/beanie, but after they told me that I needed an all black hat I just let 'em hang out the bottom. Nobody ever said anything about that... if they had it would have been strike three and I probably would have told them to go fuck themselves :D

It's all been said before... Getting a job when you have locks just takes self confidence and maybe a hair-tie or hat. Yes their are people who will hate on you, but fuck them. If you can't handle it... cut.

how come no one ever says there a full time dad? i mean, i go to work and provide money, but i come home, cook dinner, help the kiddies with home work, help the lil ones with the bath, do laundry. pet my dogs, play ball, or video games with the older kids, but i never considered that a job , i find that to be a great time spent with the family.. i only wish i could be home more to actually do more around the house to help the wifey, who works full time as a nurse at johns hopkins, goes to school to further her nursing carreer, and does other stuff around the house as i do, i dont mean to be offensive to all the moms out there.. but i just never considered house stuff and kid stuff a job..but hey say la vi.... i guess i will find out soon enough if the full time home thing is a job, only 2 or 3 more short years till i can retire!!! hopefully as soon as i hit the big 40, i can say fuck it, and not work anymore!!!

I grew up with a full time dad... we had a bunch of land that he liked to maintain so when I was young he was usually kept himself busy. As I've gotten older I think it's lame that he didn't do more "actual work," but on the other hand he took me to a lot of hockey games... My mom is a rock star though. I feel where you're coming from though. Taking care of your kids is not a job... it may be hard, but it's not like you had to apply for it, fuck!

I get what you're saying vulgar. But I have two young ones and do not have much of an opportunity to work outside of the house. My oldest has special needs and I could not leave him with someone else in the role that I play in his daily life. I am going to be looking for a pt out of the house job in the very near future, but I have tried to work out of hte house and it has not worked for the family. I am educated, I hold a degree and used that to start a successful business that I operate from my livingroom.

But in saying all that... any person that spends 12 hours alone with their children (my kids are 3 and 4) has a job. It is very hard work. =)

I haven't had a job yet, but I'll probably get one here. The province is 98.5% white. Being a minority is awesome sometimes... Yay for people not wanting to look racist by hiring me! :D

Your black, wherever you go people are not going to wanna hire you, then some other dude will say "yeah Ill hire you". Its just like some people In Australia will take one look at an Aboriginal and say "no, not gonna happen".

Hopefully Canada is multi-cultural and welcoming for people of all origines. Sure in the boondocks they may not be used to it and be a bit hesitant to hire a "stranger", but in the city, no problem. I had black and middle-eastern bosses in my previous jobs, so it sure isn't an issue! ;)

A big part of my income comes from my work as a receptionist in a lawfirm. I also am a freelance photographer, fashion designer, hairfalls/wigs maker and DJ. I don't make a living with those yet, but they bring me extra money to spoil myself and the ones I love. I don't have dreads anymore, but when I used to I didn't have any trouble to find a job. Call centres are your friend for that, they don't care at all about their staff's appearance as long as you are clean and decent and give a good service to your customers.

Wasnt being racist by the way, but yeah Australia Is known for Its "multiculturalism", and yet my best mate applied for a job he was more then qualified to do, and because he is cambodian/Indian/African (the kids got about 10 different bloodlines In him), they didnt hire him. Why do I kow this? because the next day we went back and the job was filled by a white guy like myself who was not only younger, but less skilled from what we had been told by other workers.
