There is a book series I'd like to recomend to you Bilby and everyone else.
The "Fox Fire" series. This is a series of eleven books, originally produced as a quarterly magazine by a high school teacher and his ninth and tenth grade students in Northeast Georgia, in the Appalachian Mountains. It includes interviews with the older community residents of the area, folklore and material culture. Beside the intriguing folklore, each book contains a wealth of information about lost crafts and skills we may need in the future. A few of the subjects include: building a log cabin, chimney building, soapmaking, cheese making, making chairs, preserving fruit, home remedies, hunting, gardening, midwifing, wagon making, animal care, hide tanning, blacksmithing, horse trading, shoemaking, water systems, a water-powered saw mill, etc.

    groceries: Aldi or jewl osco
clothing: either a thrift store, or value city, I like wal-mart too. When I don't mind high prices I absolutely love funky munky and wild roots.
I cut my own hair, and do and pretty damn good job too. lol :)

We are getting a little bit off topic here but anyway, I do have access to much the above information.Trouble is, there is never enough time in the day to do everything.I built a blacksmith forge from a 60L oil drum, a wheel rim and gal pipes but I have as yet to fire it up.Anyone else think we should have a self-sufficiency forum? We already have a gardening section, a Backyard Mechanic forum and there has been a thread started on alternative building methods.

last time I got my hair cut I lived in another borough so id have to find a new barber... I've been growing it long cuz i feel like gettin cornrows

i buy groceries at provigo cuz thats whats closest to my house

to buy clothes i go to the downtown district in my city and i check out a few stores there... ive heard that there are better clothing stores to go to in the city but i dont know where any of em are. i check whats on the sale rack at the department stores first then i go to the urbanwear (hip hop shit) stores second then i make my choice. i want some shoes that i cant seem to find though dunno where ill go for those. i buy plain t-shirts at foot locker and i shop at army surplus stores for camo shit and bandanas but i dont really wear bandanas often plus think i got enough camo shit now so i dont think i need to go back there.

i buy cds at archambault, music world or HMV (which im not even supposed to be in cuz supposedly im banned after being caught stealing, but they never took a photo so I just use cash, cant use my bank card cuz they might have my name written down or something) doesnt really matter where cuz they have the same prices, but HMV is the most likely to have the CD i am looking for.

i buy video games at ebgames

    i buy magazines at multimags

i buy blunts and zigzags at the gas station

i bought condoms razors and deoderant and shampoo and shit like that at pharmaprix but i cant find one near where i live now so i go to jean coutu

i buy liquor at the SAQ, liquor commission, obviously cuz theres no other place to get it.

oh yea i bought glasses at newlook and probably gonna buy contacts there, and also i thought about gettin a bong so ill go to high times for that shit

not really an avid shopper, i try not to leave too huge of impact on the planet and leaving it a little better than before i got here...

but i cant really say the same for my mom who seems almost addicted to buying stuff, only 2 people live here and yet today i noticed our trash can is almost entirely full 4 days before trash day, which i thought was kindof strange(keep in mind we have a compost pile which about all of our kitchen scraps go into and decay back into the earth, and our recycling bin(the size of a regular trash bin fills to the top every 2 weeks)..to each their own though i guess...

when i do go shopping it is at thrift stores now though, there is one i went too where the proceeds went to a childrens hospital so that was kinda cool, and it was really cool and inexpensive stuff i bought too.

we grocery shop at a regular grocery store, sometimes we go to the priceclub which is a bunch of wholesale stuff which is kinda cool i guess. kindof off subject but i just think it is very unfair we shop and think we need stuff and waste all this unbiodegradable plastic and trash and its so important to be doing this stuff and we all have all these luxuries and possibilities just waiting right in front of us simply because we were lucky enough to be born here, where people in other countries are still dreaming of stuff like food to eat and a decent place to sleep in at night that we have never truely thought anything of...i just wish people would wake up and realize what really goes on in the world and start asking if it really needs to go on or is it because were just being greedy? and are we really that dumb and animal-like that we value greed so much we cant even be kind to our own species and maybe even the earth and its inhabitants(we arent the only ones, in case you didnt know..)? or at least respect the earth , and try to live a little more harmoniously and in balance with it.... its not like we cant do it..

i dumpster dive/trashdig also and find some amaaazing things to give away and keep and sell via an ebay like program at my moms work and will probably be getting a lot of stuff that way in the future.....i just made a thread in this forum about a really cool looking place to shop online though which is definatley worth checking out...

i totally agree w/ you that people are too greedy or selfish or uncaring! they dont think about anyone but themselves or they are simply ignorant, which isnt an excuse either! just b/c these people dont see the tragedies & people suffering doesnt mean they dont exist! my grandparents tlak about "taking care of your own family" ahead of everything else. well, thats the attitude that doesnt stop suffering! we need to stop thinking only of ourselves & help out others. these are just my ideas, sorry to rant, but i had to respond to what you said!

    peace & love

I have a hard time buying pants at thrift stores. For one I'm 6'1 last time I checked so length wise some times its hard to find, also I *can* wear a 32 but i like them a bit loose so i wear 34. When i do find a pair of pants length wise its usely way to big in the waist. Plus I don't like pants that eat your tesitcals heh...So i go to Wal mart for pants or Goodies just because they are the same price as walmart *well the one around here is* I buy all my sweaters from thrift stores. I have alot of shirts that people either gave to me or i bought back in the 9th grade. Most of my buying problems are a result of me living in a small hokey pokey town while it has a colloge but i guess colloge kids dont give things to thriftstores. But i'm moving to Chattanooga Tn here in may so WOO they have some bit thrift stores and such.

Clothes come from thrift stores, or I swap items with friends. I've started making more of my own, too.

Food comes from a lot of different places. I usually don't set out to go grocery shopping, I just combine it with other errands. There are two good farmers markets near me, so I try to hit at least one each week. There's a nice produce stand I go to often, too. There's a good Asian grocery store in Tampa that has great prices on tofu and rice, and another in St. Pete where I can get good prices on fruit. I hit one health food store for their good prices on honey and bulk goods. I'll also shop at a salvage grocery store for canned beans, juice and the like. What I can't get at those sources I'll buy at the chain grocery store.

I usually cut my hair myself. When it gets out of hand enough for me to want someone else to take a whack at it, I go to this little punk rock store in St. Pete.

We do a lot of the repairs on our cars ourselves. Parts are from the junk yard downtown, if possible. If I need a mechanic's help, I have a good one in Dunedin. I avoid chains.

My daughter takes a few different medicines for asthma, and we go to the last independently owned pharmacy in Clearwater. These guys are great. They'll even deliver if you don't have time to go in and pick up your medications.

I do the odd bit of dumpster diving, too. What I find is usually given away to friends or to the thrift store.

Artful Dodger instead of buying canned beans of any kind, why not buy dried ones. They don' t take that long to cook if you soak them first (preferably overnight).

I use dry ones, too, sometimes. The reasons I do canned are twofold: One, dry requires a bit of time & preplanning. I'm in school fulltime, have two kids, freelance part-time, and volunteer for my local IMC... so, time is usually an issue, and schedules can be a bit unpredictable. Reason two: I live in Florida with no air conditioning, and there is no way in HELL I'm running my stove for three hours at a stretch once it gets warm out. What I need to do is get around to getting myself a crock pot.

In the meantime, I buy canned for around 25 - 33 cents for 15 oz. This is more than dry, but still cheaper than most meals.

Other random note: I'd love it someone started a self-sufficiency forum here.

Ebay! I buy almost eeeverything on Ebay. But for the other stuff, make up and shampoo and junk, either Aveda or The Body Shop where I work (all natural fun things) Goodwill, a place here called Planet XChange, and a place called Green Earth Emporium. Those are probably my favorite stores. I like Target too though!

Until i researched a few things behind wal-mart, it was THE place to go to get a good deal. But now I shop at the local healthfood store, Rite-Aid/Longs/Target instead. They're more expensive, but I'm actually spending less money because I'm focusing more on quality and necessity than quantity.
