Belmont and Clark sucks even for bowls unless your getting some huge ellaborate piece. You want a cheap bowl in chicago? go to any convinience store and do a quick bowl smoking hand motion to the clerk...Anything else youd want to get there you could get cheaper online without seeing a bunch of preachy, self-righteous douche bags.

Wicker Park is ok but its pretty much turning into Belmont and Clark, highly recomend Earwax cafe and reckless records(great old horror movie selection)

Im 18 so I dont really know any hippies other then the ones that use it as an excuse to drop acid and go to the full moon drum circles in the city(if your into that), so cant help you.

I live in the heart of downtown Evanston, its decent.

oh and yeah, Amigos and us... rocks.

Heh heh heh. . . well, I sure as hell wouldn't reccomend South Shore or thereabouts in Chicago to anyone with a propensity for being open and friendly with strangers or honestly believing in the fundamental connection between all peoples. Because you will be taken for every last little thing you have- right down to your shoelaces- and left in the gutter.

There is NO reason to live there. I had friends living in Roger's Park a couple of years back (opposite end of the city, but still) where you can still find rents just as low with more reliable public transport and easier access to the interesting parts of the city.

You might be able to find something affordable in Hyde Park (home of UChicago) which is, of course, a really neat area. But it would be a crappier place for more money with fewer amenities and more hassles all-around. Also I imagine there's a decent amount of crime spillover from the SE side.

If you search the housing ads on Craigslist/Chicago there's a group of three related co-ops that usually have a room open or soon-to-open. If that's your gig, this would probably be the best way to find a home and a family all-in-one. I'll see if I can dig up the actual page and post back.

    Chitown Co-op Wiki

Qumbya is the particular group to which I was referring, and there are a nice amount of details on their site.

    Good luck.

I'd definitely reccomend the north side. I'm currently living in the wrigleyville neighborhood and love it. Also, the northern burbs are super nice too. I'm origionally from Winnettka which is just north of the city.

Oh and another spot for head material, Sight & Sound, forget if it's in Darien or just on the edge of it, but it's in the lot on Ogden & Cass back in the NW corner of that strip mall by the Asian grocery store. It's a small shop but they pack alot into that small space.
Then theres Adams Apple which is way north on California (Past Foster IIR), that store is old as dirt. Pricey but has some nice pieces on sale.

P.S. Anyone remember a card / novelty store on Clark called Rocket 69? Used to be just a few shops south of Belmont but seems to have gotten annexed by the health food store. WTH happened, anyone know?

I really think we're all scattered.
I mean I think there aren't any real hippie groups in Chicago, and if there are, I haven't come across any.
