    Today I passed a milestone!

I went barefoot to a Whole Foods in Boulder I'd never been to before. I also went barefoot to a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Boulder that I'd never been to before.

Those were the 400th and 401st different public places I've successfully visited barefoot this year!!!

I also went barefoot to a Post Office, but I can't take credit for it because I already went barefoot there earlier this year and took credit then.

I probably won't get too many more in this year. Tomorrow's supposed to be nice, but the rest of the week is cold, snow, and rain. Sorry, I'm only barefoot in nice weather

That's great, StraightToes. :) That's good the Whole Foods store didn't give you a hard time for going in there barefoot. They seem to have a notorious reputation for being one of the most barefoot unfriendly establishments. There is a Barnes & Noble bookstore not too far from me that's barefoot friendly as well, located near a marina, so it's not at all unusual to see people walking around barefoot there.

I have to agree with you about being a fairweather barefooter. When the weather out here is cold and rainy, I [reluctantly] wear shoes and socks. :(

Yeah, I've read that Whole Foods has that reputation. Fortunately, I haven't experienced it. Looking at my list, this year I went barefoot to four different Whole Foods locations without any problems. I also went barefoot to one of the few remaining Wild Oats stores. Wild Oats was acquired by Whole Foods. Still no problems.

It's supposed to be in the mid-50's today so maybe I can leave the shoes at home when I run errands after work. The rest of the week looks pretty ugly.

Cool! And I bet the old sculptor had no problems with your bare feet. It seems that as we age we figure out what's really important and what's bullshit. It's probably not a conscious decision on his part, but he just realizes that if you want to go barefoot, what's really wrong with it?

I wanted to follow-up on my additions from earlier this week. Yesterday the temperature got into the mid 50's with bad weather on the way. I was meeting a friend for beers after work, so I took advantafge of the warmer weather and the drive to hit a couple of new places. So numbers 402 and 403 are:

    • Walgreen's - I needed to pick up an item. They only had one of the item and I wanted two. I had a polite discussion with the Store Manager in the aisle with me barefoot and in shorts. He never even glanced down!
    • Credit Union Branch - I needed cash for beers!

I put on flip-flops to go into the bar to meet my friend. I didn't want the hassle of possibly being denied service when I really wanted to meet my friend. Needless to say, I kicked off my flip-flops as soon as I sat down. By my definition I don't count that as going someplace barefoot. To add a place to my list I have to enter barefoot, transact any business, etc. while remaining barefoot, and exit barefoot.

By the time I left the bar, the temperature was dropping and cold rain was coming down. Today it's snowing. I had an appointment early this morning and I wore hiking boots - and they actually felt good! Oh well, we're supposed to have a warm-up over the weekend! :)

Has anyone ever entered a bar barefoot? It would definitely be a different experience from barefoot shopping. I don't think people would notice as much because they are busy drinking and playing pool/darts or talking. but if a 'loud drunk' saw you and decided to make a scene, it would make for an uncomfortable situation at least for me.

I guess, it depends on the definition of "bar" - over here, a place called "bar" is more something like a poorly-lit small place, where sometimes scantilly-clad ladies serve customer in a very personal manner... aside from not going to such kind of places, I wouldn't enter them barefoot, either.

I have been to several pubs in Germany barefoot, including Irish pubs, and after some visits, I was famous for being the barefoot guy with his Snakebite and a shot of Tyrconnell. :D Since those pubs don't have bouncers at the door, there never was a hassle about my footwear or lack thereof.

    Wiggling pub-proven toes,

  11. I've heard various stories about bars, mostly negative. "Hey, buddy, there's broken glass all over the place!" "Sir, you can't come in here like that!" "Hey, where d'ya think YER goin'?"
Indeed, there are genteel watering holes where bare feet benignly disappear in the alcoholic haze, but those places are your holies grails. Good luck!

In the U.S., "bar" and "pub" are pretty synonymous. I'm sure the dictionary would have a fine-line distinction, but in general, one equals the other.

I've never tried entering a bar/pub barefoot. It's not from a lack of desire, rather, I'm usually meeting friends and I don't want to go through the hassle of being denied service/arguing. A female friend of mine who's also into going barefoot has tried entering bars barefoot on a few occasions. She said she's always been told she needs shoes to enter. While I love going barefoot, sometimes I give into the system just because of the situation.

I did actually try out 2 bars one time in NYC and had no problem. The friend I was meeting insisted I not even bring emergency shoes so I couldn't back out. No one in the bars cared. Also used the subway, looked at sneaks in a shoe store, etc. It's kind of exciting when you have no choice....

I totally agree! That's why I rarely if ever take flip-flops with me. Just hop in the car, go where I need to be, and if I get grief (which happens very, very rarely) it's their loss.

I got to the point where I can leave my shoes behind. Sometimes I chicken out though. Then it bugs me because it feels like a lost opportunity. If I could work for myself, I'd do like you hillman and not even own shoes until the weather made it necessary.

    I got out of bed.
That's all I've done barefoot for about the past two months, besides bathe of course. I'm starting to feel like my feet aren't even a part of me anymore, but I can't break this pattern of getting up, throwing socks on, and never taking them off again until I go to bed.

I went to the eye doctor to pick up my glasses.

Over the summer I went barefoot into several places. Target, Walmart, Kmart, Kohls, Toys R Us, several convenience stores, gas station, post office, CVS, Blockbuster, Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Wendy's, Subway(restaurant), Dunhams Sporting Goods, Burger King, Hollywood Video, Best Cuts, Great clips, Steak N Shake, The library, an outdoor outlet mall, Mr. Hero. I know i'm missing a few but thats all I can think of now.

I've been to bars in Lawrence, KS barefoot - not a problem! Not one bouncer has turned me away for a lack of shoes, ever.

Friday, I went to: bank - inside not atm, Whole Foods, gas station, and post office. Was a rainy yet warm day. Lots of folks in flipflops, one girl was bf at the gas station. Had no issues anywhere that day.
