there are two kinds of hippies-

the commercial hippies, who wear tie-dye and wear flowers in their hair and get stoned and wear huge peace signs and faded jeans,

and then there are the hippies who aren't the commercial hippies.

and i'm not stereotyping because we all have our inner hippies :sunglasse

I dunno about you, I was talking about the wannabe posers who say "I'm a hippie!" even though they don't understand any of the views/beliefs. It's not just what you wear or what you smoke or what you listen to, it's a whole bunch of things, it's a lifestyle.

i wear the tye dye and have dreads and what not..not because its hippy..just cause i like it:)..i dont like how ppl judge before they get to know...like ppl just look at me and ask if i have pot or acid..or just call me the hippie..im not just the hippie..im me...i have alot of the "hippie" beliefs but i careless if i fit into a stereotype...it doesnt matter...it just matters if your true to yourself.....i know alot of ppl who call other ppl posers..but what gives them the right to judge if there fake or not?...tolerance and love is the key:)..o and about the drugs thing..its really funny because ppl think i do all these drugs because the way i look and i dont...my friend wears tye dyes and is what you can call a hippie (goes to all the protests etc too)..and ppl ask her for pot all the time and yet she will never smoke...peace and love

Wake the hell up! We're all just a bunch of brats pretending to be hippies, we're just better at it. Unless you actually experienced the sixties, you don't know shit about it. Not all hippies were happy and cheerful, they we're just as fucked up then as we are now.

the hippie movement was in the 60s, but the hippy spirit is inside everyone. its more prevalent in some people, and some people will just be posers because they think that its cool. hippies werent only alive in the 60s, they are still alive, young and old. Just because you didnt live in the 60s doesnt mean that its impossible to be a hippy. living the hippy way is just doing what you want, not letting anyone or anything hold you back. and speaking out against the obvious wrongdoings that go on in the world. that is what being a hippy is all about, in my opinion. tiedye and drugs have nothing to do with it.

TheJesusDude- You said that the kids who liked hunting weren't hippies and then you said that real hippies are hippies because they didn't fit into the stereotype. The stereotypical hippie doesn't like hunting, the kids did like hunting. By your personal definition the kids were hippies.

JOsie- I'm not really sure if you're correct when you say that the very nature of the counterculture of the '60s was drugs and music. I think that the media had a hand in perpetrating the idea of the hippie as a drug fiend in order to discredit the counterculture. Every hippie you see in the movies crazy over drugs, and therefore simplified to just a person who is crazy over drugs, has his or her part in discrediting Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger. Because of all of those peoples' connection to the hippie movement, they are automatically simplified to merely potheads that listen to the Beatles. The same thing happened to black people, really. Reefer Madness taught the people of that decade to expect that black people would be smoking joints and breaking into your house. Drugs are a really easy way to discredit any movement or race- it simplifies them.
And regarding your story about the beginning of the word 'hippie'- where did you hear that? I've always heard that the word got it's beginning when Michael Fallon coined the term in an article about the Blue Unicorn coffeehouse, and the Frisco counterculture scene in general.

everyone's lookin' for love in a different way, let's give 'em a hand, easy on the criticism.

whats wrong with tye dyes they're fun and why so down? knocking people down who have chosen to do that instead of opening your heart to their minds and views, it just seems a shame to slam everyone who are like that and lump them all together, have you asked people like what you mentioned and asked them why? I don't do drugs but I like a lot of old music like I like some modern music because it appeals to me and I have tye dyes just cause they're a fun expression, I believe I'm a hippy in whats in my heart and thats a sense of love for the world and everyone and every creature and understanding a view of non violence that things can be resolved peacefully not by how I look I don't know if that makes me one but then labels don't matter as long as I'm happy with who I am thats really all that matters. Anyway peace n love :)

i completely agree. people ask me for pot, acid, etc. all the time and i find it rather annoying. However, i generally just shrug it off, or nod and agree. Then there are the close minded people who don't even understand why i don't act entirely like them. they also annoy me. but i love 'em anyways.

I'd like to agree with all the people who said that "hippie" really has no borders...even in the 60's it had no borders...just people, brothers and sisters like everyone else...there is no "true hippie club" you get kicked out of if you don't follow certain beliefs, thats the point, open mindedness, love, it's just a nice grouping because we can feel we have a general understanding in eachother even though we can all be very different at the same time...

And to prove my point we label John Lennon as a hippie and he was active and did all sorts of wonderful stuff, but in the same run we also call Cheech and Chong hippies and they just wore tie dye and smoked dope...it's just a word, just a culture. we are still first individuels. We don't say everyperson of a certain skin or eye colour all act the same do we? Why? 'cause we're free...:)

edit: when i was a little kid, like little little, i asked people that and some people laughed and said yes, some people said that they are too old, and some people said hippies are evil.

Jee, I didn't know you could tell the difference in between a "real" hippy and a "fake" hippy that easily over the internet. Dude, you must have some sort of 6th sense or something.

hey... cool... my old screen name used to be EvilHippy. :p I joined this site after someone asked my math teacher "was there ever an evil hippy?" (my math teacher was a hippy) and she said "I suppose so" and that's always been stuck in my mind.
