I remember the first time I felt like a hippie, started feeling those hippie vibes... we were gathered in a room in university residence smoking hash.. that's where it all began. Full realization came later.. though I don't remember exactly when..

When my dad asked me to mow the lawn and I refused because I didn't want to kill all those beautiful wild flowers. And he called me a longhaired bum, was pretty funny. Then my hair grew even longer and I washed it less and less, my view of the world was changing and then I realized I was becoming a hippie.

when I smelled that VW bus mix of exhaust, um... "smoke" and dog and realized i liked it?

Seriously, my 3rd grade counselor in Mass. said that i should move out west that i would "feel more at home".

    Good God was she right!

I've decided that I don't really fit into any one subculture. I identify with a lot of things that you might consider "hippie", but I've got a lot of "goth" in me as well. I'm also a big-ass geek, I do well in the world of academia when I bother to work, and I like extreme sports. I can find a comfortable perch in a large number of fringe groups.

I'm just me. I don't really care if I'm a hippie or not, I just like the people here and I find often relate to things people talk about around here. I suppose I get along with pretty much anyone who is open-minded and liberal, so there ya go.

Nice, keep being yourself. There are many guys and girls who will accept you and like you with out make up and brushed hair, infact I prefer that.

I was probably around 14 when I started to realize that I cared more about the environnement than alot of people. When I dressed like a hippy in high school, other people did too, but when I kept dressing my way when everybody else followed the trends I knew I was a hippy. My mom thinks I was born in the wrong era, she calls me a gypsy.

Since I learned what a hippie was, I guess. I grew up on the Dead and Jimmy Buffett songs about the ocean and staring at mom and dad's "save the environment" type buttons and eventually got more and more into the culture.

i have to say, i was about 9 or 10 when my mom pointed it out to me...so i guess i could've voted on two different answers, huh?
I was listening to the beatles, and i has covered my room in bealtes posters, and had 2 lava lamps, i had all these (unlit) candles in my room, and beads on the outside of my door. i wrote peace and love on everything, and began asking my mom to buy me those cool looking bell bottoms. Lots of color. So she turns to me and says, well, i am not quite sure how it happened, but i think i raised a little flower child... :) what a mom!

Yeah, I started practising wicca when I was younger but back then I didn't really know what it was all about. Lately i've been reading up on it some more and understanding the purpose behing it all, love and respect for nature is the first step.

Anyone else find it amusing that the biggest POP band of all time got all of these people into being a hippy? I find their 3 cord, made for radio, poppy as hell music to be the farthest thing from hippy music. Just cause they spent 5 minutes with the pranksters does not make them or their music hippyfied.
Half-hearted / half-kidding rants aside, I suppose for me it was Phil's B-day show in 1990 (cap center). The blotter had me thinking that there was a halo around Jerry's head, and the scene felt like home.

Actually, I realised when I was 13-14 that I was not hippie. I realised I was VERY far from perfect. That's why I try to be more myself and in the same time I do my best to be kind and generous and all those "hippish" things. But please let's stop labeling ourselves.
