Crap, hhb that article is awful I didn't mean that kind of recycling business, though. I meant finding junk and turning it into art, or material to set up a cafe/theatre.
What I've seen that has worked for many communities and non profit groups is offer something that people want. as was already stated too many people are just buying cheap $##^ from overseas and don't buy local or hand made goods that will last a lifetime. What people do want and appreciate is entertainment, experiance and knowledge. Not everyone will appreciate these three things but most will like at least one of them... I'm refering to Classes. people like to enroll and take classes on a multitude of subjects and like to be able to get hands on, and involved in something. a lot of communities teach sustanibility classes, have schools over to visit, have a partnership with a community club or some such activity. One of the other things is a lot of the communities have visitors or guests that pay for the priviledge of living on the community for a small period of time, weather it be one night or one month... It may not pay all the bills but every little bit helps and if people have fun they'll tell others and it's free advertizing... Hosting events on the land may also be a way to earn some extra cash... Lastly, especially in these economic times with a lot of people jumping on the it's the end of the world thing... People are starting to return to a lot of values of old, a lot of these same values towards nature and towars life that are rampant in communities. People will pay to have someone give talks about thriftyness, gardening, composting, alternate medicines, energy efficiency, making do with less or without. people are looking for alternatives to modern "solutions" for an easy life, ways to cut costs, ways to better their situation. Any skill you have can earn you goods or good will both are really valuable... also remeber as someone alluded to, it is easier to lower costs than to increase income. understanding that you can only lower costs so much, but remembering to do more with the little you do have. hope some of this helped.
