I won't touch the crap that goes around at the music fests. But instead of wanting to learn how to manufacture LSD, we need to learn more about the politics of the country in which we live. We need to organize and have non-violent sit ins. We need to educate the public on what is really happening right under thier noses and let them know that together we can make a change. PS. LSD had a profound effect on the way I saw the world and I am in no way dissing anyone for doing it but acid should be taken for the right reasons and thats to reach into your higher consciencness and explore the world around you. You don't "need" to do this more than 5-10 times. But the crap they are passing off as acid now days is not and its speed based and I just don't see the purpose. But then again...I had my trips.
Ive been reading this thread for damn close to an hour, and more than once, i was moved to tears. Where i live, there are NO hippies (I Classify hippies as radical free thinkers, Live and let live, Accepting human beings who are want to change the world despretly, But who also want to have a little fun on the way, Like Me ) And i was starting to lose faith in humanity and felt myself slipping into a major depression. Then I Read this. Ive never felt more refreshed. I Want to let everyone know, as soon as im 18, i am moving out of this shithole and i am going to try my hardest to change this sad world we live in. Up until now, I always thought i was a part of a dying breed, and as soon as i was old enough to make a stand, there would be no one to support me. Thank you all! This really lifted my spirits. See you guys in the protest rallys in a couple years! Josh
you can use peyote and shrooms as well if you want to expand your mind. i would like to start somekind of hippy community and life the way we want. but i think i would like to finish my education first, knowledge is power. next to that it will give me some time to think about what i really wanna do. i don't want "to change the world" but i do wanna show everyone there are alternatives to life than the way our people life in our societies.
Where you lived in the 60s was important. If you lived in San Francisco or New York and had long hair and acid eyes; you were safe. If on the other hand you lived in Texas or Arkansas or just about anywhere else; it could be dangerous. The hippy's were treated like dirt all but a few places in America until after 68 or so. Then America was getting used to the sight of us comin down the road. Once the shock wore off and they saw we were harmless (never mind Manson) then it got better for everybody.
You're absolutely right! Yes it was an amazing time and I loved every second of it, but I have to give due to the bad part of that era. Lets not forget Vietnam and draft card burning, and the sheer horror of war and the thoughts of the cold war. Facts from the late fifties and early sisxties, still fresh in our minds...and our parents. The 60's were incredible and the early 70's likewise, but lets remember those that went away and didn't come back to be a part of that whole scene. We all need to keep the memories both good and bad alive so there is balance. The hippy movement is alive but needing a little TLC. Keep all the memories lest we forget something important. Grandpa Hippy.
i think it was great living at a time when the collective consciousness was strong so people didn't have to worry about std's
its not lame, its called mind over matter... hippies learned quantum principles and were able to curve space like einstein did
why is it that I have this overwhelming feeling of nostalgia for an era that I havent experienced? (or at least not in this lifetime?) I feel shafted......................................
Well-Looks liike your havin fun ridin the waves though-Thats a great sport I used to love it-Don't feel cheated Dolly. Mss. Dagger is a nice lady whom I would love to take on a personel guided tour of the wild and wacky San Francrazy!-Little known fact-The original ACID Tests were held at a rental hall in Fishermans Wharf at the Longshoremans Hall-It was very colorful and the price of admission was your gray matter-lol-You have alot of nice things here and now-I love the fact that your generation has a much easier way to keep track of the scoundrels running the show-thanks to Internet "no waiting-no hiding" instant news service-thats great! During Viet Nam days-Something like the Mi Lei Massacre would stay hidden for months before some brave reporter finally got the guts to report it-I liked it then and now-
Dolly-If you could go to 66 what would you be doing and what bands would you want to hear?-Ya know alot of people think they would love to hear some groups from their first albums; but alot of these groups especially the San Francisco groups were still new and had no experience-They were very exciting to watch like Blue Cheer because they had a new sound-In their case LOUD-The music was good but like the Airplane; it was the second album that got them on the charts. One thing that was nice was the fact that we the people of the Haight Ashbury and the city were used as practice audience before they hit the road to do the world wide tours-That was fine as it was always free in the park!-Santana grew up in the Mission District and him and his group would play for free at Dolores Park on weekends. More groups should do this to get recognition I think-So-Dolly-How many pounds of beads would you be wearing and how many gallons of Patchouli oil would you go through in one year? lol-Would you live in the city or down the coast where you could surf everyday like I did-How many nights a week would you be at the Fillmore or the Avalon gettin your ears opened up and your mind expanded-need I say more?-And if you were still in high school do you think you would be able to make it to school the next day?-I wasn't-unfortunatley-There was a drawback to being in the middle of the party-It is hard to accomplish any real goals when your 18 young and wild and eating Owsley 3 or 4 times a week-Ying and Yang-no regrets-
I would do everything I could...definately the Acid Tests....see the Dead and Airplane, Blue Cheer fo sho.....Big Brother.....just go see music everywhere. Id load up on beads....go a little easy on patchouli. Live in Ocean Beach...beach there, city behind me. Id go to the dances every night I could, and get a house in Haight and open my doors to anyone...hold jam sessions...Now, if I could go back in time and take something with me to turn people on, it woul be reggae. I think the hippies would have dug it. I think reggea became popular in the States in the early 70s? I would love to introduce it around 65-66.
Yea-Raggae would definely be big -I first hard it in the early 70s in Portland-I had a friend in a group that played it-They had the steel drums etc. You could also bring along the internet-We could have really used it then-But with the invention of acid it may have taken a little longer to figure it out-hahahah
I remember Raggae in Golden Gate Park in the late 60s.. the jamacains beating out their song on their conga drums.. with their dreads flying and leaving tracers in the air, like twisted snakes dancing to a tribal beat.. it would mesmerize the listener, bringing them to their feet unable to be still. Their bare feet and colofull decor, enchants the onlooker.. Taking their minds far away from the gravity of man. sh
Being a long haired 'acid eating hippy could be the funnest thing on Earth in 66 or it could be your worst nightmare-It was all about location-location-If you walked down the street in San Francisco then people would smile and wave and throw the peace sign-If you were high and walked down the stree in Bakerfield you could expext some bad remarks and the finger being thrown-If you hitched across America it could be very dangerous as we the so called draft dodging no good dirty hippy's were hated by alot of people that thought we had every right to be in Viet Nam and anyone that thought otherwise was a communist-So for a long time there was a big split in this country-fortunately it was over as the people who hated us started hating Nixon and his group and saw the war for what it was-a terrible mistake-The American people had been duped and many of our young people died for that mistake-The soldiers were not to blame; the leaders were-and they are doing it again-this time it won;t go on and on-The 60s were a fun time but you also had to be ready to fight to keep your self alive at times-It just depended on where you were-
