Classical music was what inspired me to enter the world of composition. And even today, it remains my greatest muse.
Reading the OP title, I thought about it. When I was young, our house didn't have cable TV; just antenna TV... the several channels and UHF channel for National Geographic sorts of things. The exposure I had to cable TV was in the den of a friend's house. As an adolescent, I was taken aback by videos; Under The Bridge, Evenflow, Faith No More, and Ugly Kid Joe too, etc. There was emotional relevance to be evaluated, but I couldn't relate it to anything in my life. I was a young Mexican American in the den of my neighborhood friend's parents watching something that was in our house not provided. I felt a lot of angst about trying to relate my existence to this 'phenomenon'. I didn't understand it though, and tried to make it work by wearing longer hair. Then came boarding school. I learned to play the guitar from a peer who could play lead and took after his father who was also a guitarist. He was not the son of either of the famous rock star parents I've written about previously. I felt as inspired as I could, and tried to play Come As You Are and Nothing Else Matters, but basically felt less relevant by playing these songs; I didn't feel like I belonged with any truth at all. Finally, I met a musician at a different school who was working Nightwatch. He had worked as a professional session musician and had performed with famous rock bands when they needed a horn or guitar. Somewhere along the line I had enough down time to write lyrics. That is what inspired me. I could do it... If I wanted to credit the inspiration to any one band, Pearl Jam made a tremendous impact on the way I understood myself as an emotional being. I used that as a tool to try to belong even though I didn't feel welcome based on what I knew about alternative rock, slam dancing, concerts, and MTV. I still do not truly belong to a subculture, but I can make believe with the best of them; though I'm far too old for that now. This is my favorite song by Pearl Jam:
What instrument do you play.? When I was young and getting bored at home, my mother always said, "Go and play the piano".
I usted to play guitar. But now I have miastenia gravis, so I cannot play anymore. But I like to listen certain plays, like Wagner's, to write.
