What should the age of consent be?

I think that by the age of 18, girls would have a pretty good idea who the flakes or phonies are that would say anything just to take advantage of them. Although, not always. I reckon some men will be phonies their whole lives.

 

Hi Wolverine: I think that women are on the offensive now. With Birth Control Pills, IUDs and women's lib, and soap operas, the former "Bo Peeps" are taking control of their sexuality. Like Iike said on one of my earlier posts, girls are now wanting to wear makeup and sexy underwear somewhere between 9-13. By the age of 16 they are looking forward to romance and adult sexuality. Look at the illegitimate birth rates encountered during Republican Administrations, wherein naive men preached abstinence and denial of contraception. The writing is on the wall. Not all girls are this way, but the majority are in the game.

 

I don't think you can put a number on it. 14 yr old girls in the 70's [ in UK] were way more mature than todays girls of 19 or even early twenties. Same for boys. Life has changed that much in even that short span of time. Whether that is for the good or not ,I don't know.

 

I want to throw a BIG wrench into this gearbox. How about if it was a same sex relationship? Would that fact no pregnancy could occur change your point of view? Interesting thought, isn't it?

 

I'm probably going to get my wrist slapped with a ruler here but I think the age should be 14 nationwide and do away with the state to state crap. Girls are no more mature in one state than the next so just have a blanket law that says 14 and be done with it. Assuming the "age of consent" still means at what age is it considered legal for a girl to make her own decision what she does with herself in situations when her guardian adult is not present, and figuring most girls who are not home studying or babysitting in some capacity are going to do what they're going to do regardless and it seems the common age for that is 13 and 14 these days. My other point for voting for this age is when there''s a disputed custody battle involving teens and where they are better off living with one parent or the other, it's customary for a judge to allow the juvenile to decide which parent they want to reside with once they reach age 14.

 

Here in Australia I would be happy with 14 being the age of consent since most girls are having sex at 13 .

 

14 is very reasonable. I there is a will (which is usually extremely strong at that age) there is a way. NO law NO GOD no one is going to convince them otherwise. Dutch/Netherlands figured this out and how to handle it. Remove all curiosity by telling them EVERYTHING from birth. Promoting all other forms of sex except intercourse. And encouraging masturbation both alone and instead of intercourse. Both teen pregnancy and STD's plummeted! Kids are having a great time and very satisfied. Even their grades improved! This was how I was raised. I frequently masturbated with friends very openly. There was no fear or shame or hiding it. And we were so satisfied we never thought of intercourse. I was never told not to try intercourse. Then again it was mostly boys. LOL

 

Kinda also depends on how old the man is. Why in hell would say a 20 yr old male wanna mess with a 14yr old female? When i was abt 17 i turned down a 12yr old. Kinda regretted it then. But i had no business there. I was babysitting her & her brothers. I was a virgin & she not. But that still dont justify messing around.

In some of our rural areas. Standard practice is for a young girl to marry a much older man. That way she may she may inherit something.

 

In fact some states may still allow it. Although i aint heard a legality of under 13. but go back in time a lil ways. & look.

True and my point exactly. The majority of women began their first sexual adventures at age 13, or 14 at the least. Some of the "good girls" do actually wait till they're 15 or 16 but by then they're so anxious to get on with it they often make mistakes in choosing their first timer with and wish they had a do over. And since the majority of girls end up doing it their first time with guys a few years older anyway it only seems fit to have the age be 14. So sue me.

 

When I was growing up, the age of consent was... 10 for both girls and boys. Then it got changed to 16 and from there 18 but the reality is that boys and girls get into sex way before reaching the legal age of consent where they live. The age was upped due to our state having a high rate of teen pregnancies and infant mortality rates; that and the real predation rate was off the charts and, well, the state decided that you can't consent unless you're 18. I was looking at the current AoC laws in my home state (to prove a point to someone on another forum) and they kinda don't make any sense; you have to be 18 to consent to heterosexual and homosexual sex... but you can be 16 or 17 and still consent as long as the person wanting sex with you isn't five or more years older and even had something for those under the age of 16, which I felt set the stage for the next section: What constitutes illegal sexual contact.

 

Vote 14, This is all culturs understanding, look on real things in biology, what age humans hormones go into brain? This is true age...

but in my option age of consent should be in different steps.
consent to play strip poker could be young maybe 14
age for same sex partners could be 14
oral sex opposite sex be 16
intercourse opposite sex be 21 after you can support a baby

Interesting comment you have considering the current assortment of seemingly mentally challenged politicians and their hordes of religiously attached followers legislating reductions of an assortment of freedoms. Why should there be more restrictions instead of supporting the ideas of freedoms for all rather than just the ones that are allowed to vote.

 

If we were only as enlightened as we are hipocritical, bigoted, selfserving and judgemental..there would be no need for an age of consent. Ironic that slavery was abolished, yet it survives through authoritarianism, subjugation and governed ignorance.

 

When I see the word "consent" I think "agree to". I don't know how it's defined legally. There's no limit to topics one might consent to. Being told when to be home? What social media to sign up for? All kinds of things. So I believe we have to be more specific.

What comes to mind is consenting with whom to partake in sexual activity. In some countries I'm told it's legal for 13 year olds to have sex with whoever they choose. It seems to work. I haven't heard of any detrimental effects from this. Obviously the key word is consent. And men are still held in account for any children they father. Girls at 13 can be quite ready to experience it.

In school many girls I was aware of were starting sex at 13. In that era it was common for most mothers to start their daughters on birth control pills after they got their first period. I'm not saying that's "right", but how it was. Maybe it gave them license? I do remember there were certain girls eager to get it on with any boy they could. Some admitted to having screwed adults, though that was illegal. They said it like bragging and to give the idea that you'd not have to worry about repercussions or attachment if you did it with them. Lots of girls then would come on to guys for sex and be clear about it. They could legally screw anyone under the age of 18.

It was like a magic barrier that the day before you turned 18 you could consensually screw anyone younger but not older then from that day forth it could only be someone that age or older. It does seem rather arbitrary when you look at it objectively. And tons of people have been persecuted for crossing that boundary.
