Near 50 and been at it awhile. In my experience hippies are not hippies because of one thing. There are different hippies just like other groups. I have over time been put into several different groups, mostly because of looks, young long hair, hippy or as the squares would call us punks. People have thought I was a Biker or a redneck cowboy, because of people I would hang out with. I did not pick friends for looks or because they fell in one group. I would listen to there words and try to underestand what they were like. I hung with people who had passion for life, those who did not sit in judgement of others all the time. At times it cant be helped, like those who are cruel. So what it all boils down to for me was living with a intense passion for life, going places and finding things and people to experience. For many of us at the time in the late 60,s and early 70's being a hippy was being a explorer. I wish I could still call myself one, but to be honest, which I always thought was part of it, I cant. I feel that this Democracy, added with capitalism has failed what America was supposed to be. I want to see vast changes in the way things work, so I guess I may have to call myself a revaloutionary at this point in my life. But then who says hippys arent rebels,,,,,hahhahhaha
I used to be a strict metalhead, then I started smoking herb which led me to different styles of music. Now I'm more of a hippie than a metalhead.
There is no such thing as true hippy. Dressing a certain way and doing certain things may be following "hippie ideals", but since those ideals are shared with so many lifestyles and cultures it really means nothing. In the end "hippie" is just another stereotype.
drug experimintation - tried it all but now I stick to my top three... sexual freedom - I REALLY enjoy sex, always have ;-) political protest - I have my views but not an active protestor style of music - 60s and 70s rock dominate my I-Pod but there is some occassional 80's and Jimmy Buffett fashion, hair, jewelry - I would describe my style as all my own - not trendy but not hippie either
Hmm you tell me. Drug Experimentation: Not the biggest with experiments, I like to know everything on what I'm putting in my body. Sexual Freedom: I'm not the most active person sexually, but I've been around, and I believe in sexual freedom. Political Protest: Theres a lot of that in my family as it is, I prefer to just smoke a joint and chill to some nice music. Of course I still get involved in the shit I believe in. Style of Music: If someone were to question me on "how much of a hippie I really am" based off of music, I would probably fail. I always have and always will love the music I was raised on: Beatles, Floyd, Dead. Other than those and a small several others, I don't know much about music of the 60's and 70s. Fashion, Hair, Jewelry: I guess I dress pretty normal, in the sense that if someone were to look at me, they would not think HIPPIE! All though, I do have the lazy ass dirty stoner look, once in a while you'll catch me wearing a tie-dye shirt. Oh I guess my homemade flip flops, might be considered hippie, I don't know, you tell me hahaha.
I would say it's my value in peace, hatred of violence of any kind, and my belief that people can do what they want as long as it isn't harming another. I also do listen to a lot of music from the 1960s and 1970s but I wouldn't say that has anything to do with it. I just tend to try to keep an open-mind so it's just more great music to listen to. I'd have to say within the last few years I've kind of drifted from "hippie" stage though. I'm no longer as liberal as I was when I joined this forum, in fact I don't care to be paired with liberals at all. Although I'd still rather be considered a liberal than a conservative. It's just that neither side fully uses logic, and neither side seems to actually care about us in the end. (especially conservatives) but I'm going off there. I always thought of hippie as being liberal so that's why I brought that up.
True. I think that if we're hippies, it's because of everything that surrounds us. Not just one thing in particular.
I can't attribute my hippiness to any one specific thing, so instead of participating in the poll and clicking on one thing, I thought I would expound on it here: drug experimentation-I smoke weed and do shrooms, and thats about it. I've experimented with molly once, and pills when I was younger, but now i prefer to stick to the natural stuff. I guess thats pretty hippie. sexual freedom-I dont think sexual freedom has anything to do with hippies anymore. Most people I know that sleep around a lot are not even remotely hippie. I don't sleep around. I view sex as a spiritual thing and I only like to have sex with people I love. political protest-I read a book a couple of years ago that talked about how most protests were led by student organizations. The hippies mostly turned their back on politics, although I'm sure there were plenty of exceptions. I have pretty much turned my back on politics..I don't really see the point in protesting. It doesn't do a lot of good from my point of view. I think creating your own culture and living a pacifist lifestyle is its own form of protest. style of music- The Dead is the only really "hippie" band I listen to. But I dont listen to any mainstream music and all my music comes from the soul and not from a place that is only concerned with selling records..so thats hippie in spirit. fashion, hair, jewelry-I dress the way I want to dress. I don't dress like anyone else but I don't dress like a stereotypical hippie either. I think hippie is more a state of mind than anything. I think what makes me hippie is the fact that I'm not afraid to be my own person. I'm very in touch with my inner child, I live solely in the moment, and I'm completely at home in nature. I stopped labeling myself a hippie a couple of years ago but I had a friend tell me the other day that I might be the only real hippie in my group of friends, even though an outsider would certainly label us all as hippies. He said I was a true hippie at heart because I'm always happy, I'm nice to everyone, and I play like a big kid.
Most of my "hippie" friends are conservative and I've always considered myself liberal. But we all basically believe the same thing, and that is complete personal freedom.
i read it and you hit it dead on! thank you brotha for going through that and typing it out. this is definitely something a lot of people on this forum don't quite understand. conforming to the hippy label is just perpetuating the same mode of thinking that you wanted to break free from in the first place. Sometimes being yourself and expressing yourself cause you to dress and act like a 'hippy' because these are your interests. there are then those people who want to dress and look like the people who are living a radical lifestyle and are transforming the ways they understand life. It is pretty easy to tell genuine from non-genuine people from a simple conversation. ive had people come up to me asking if i like the grateful dead first...then once it is confirmed that i listen to the dead every once in a while, they then ask if i want to smoke some weed. what is the point in that? That is the same way of thinking that sparks racism and prejudices.
fashion has nothing to do with being hippie. although i love the bohemian look i am plenty hippie naked it drives me nuts when people dress hippie or goth or any other minority trend and think it makes them look individual. i was born with a hippie outlook on life.
i think the first thing a hippie should understand is it should never be more then itself, because once you place any type of establishment on your perception then your only limiting your perception to that way. any person should have an understanding the only true way to be is exactly how you naturally where, with out the influences of everything. just be.
