What Isn't Racist These Days?

He's a good speaker and kinda funny. But c'mon...Those who advocate violence against cops don't represent Black Lives Matter, my ass. Ever seen the black lives matter hashtag trend on twitter? Most of it is calling for the deaths of cops and sometimes white people.

The problem with his argument is that \white people are shot by cops per year at the same rate as blacks. And it would take 40 years of cops killing blacks at the same annual rate to equal the amount of blacks killed by blacks in 2015 alone. Facts aren't racist.

I noticed he's doing the same thing he is stating about people misusing/abusing the term racist. Most commonly by overusing the term PC.

 

Not exactly I don't think. I'm trying to imply that when I'm called a racist by one of them, I'll take it in stride and assume they've lost their argument.

Same here. Yet isn't it racist to assume someone's world view based on their lack of melanin? Pot, Kettle, Black, lol

 

Just a couple of points

More whites are killed than blacks by the police but blacks are killed at a higher proportion to their population

Draw whatever conclusion you want from that, i just felt that should be clarified

As far as BLM, it isnt exactly a cohesive movement. The violent minority does not negate the grievances of the peaceful majority.

But algorithms designed to determine your likelihood of recidivism based on your zip code and family members wrap sheets, are not only not tested... so they're not facts, but also clearly disproportionately affect a certain group are.

It's simple to make an algorithm racist. I'll do it right now to illustrate.

So say I'm rich and I decide to give a grant to public schools, and hire someone to write some software to decide how to allocate that money.

Initially that algorithm splits the money evenly to each high school based on number of students.

so like 1 million dollars divided by 10,000 students.
I'm giving 100 per student.

Now let's says I want that to disproportionately benefit my kids schoo which is in the suburbs. Now of these 100 schools 50 are in the inner city, and 50 are in the suburbs. The schools in the inner cities have three times as many students as schools in the suburbs. So each school in the suburbs has 150 students, and each city in the suburbs has 50 students.

So now my algorithm awards 66.7 for each student in urban areas, and 200 for each student in suburban areas. That's already disproportionate. Now I'm going to add some other variables in to disproportionately . Say I'm going to reward ten percent off the top to high schools which have theater programs, which I know suburban schools do *and my kids school* does.

I can keep going if you'd like, but the point isn't that 'math is racist', it's that it's pretty easy to make an algorithm to deliver results which can be self serving rather than analytic.

 

I don't follow what's inherently racist about your hypothetical example... It's a generous act and your money which you should be able to give/spend however you want.

As far as the self-serving bit It could be argued that self-serving actions is close to the heart of capitalism. #BlackLivesMatter is self-serving as well.

 

In the example It's the person writing the algorithm who created the rules, not the person giving the gift.

 

You honestly can't tell when someone is trying to be facetious.

But with all humor there's a grain of truth
