Nothing like blistering hot tarmac on a sunny day to toughen those heels, eh?

I prefer the cool refreshing feel of wood or tile underfoot in the summer when I am barefoot.

Winters are another story and that's when the area rugs come out, the carpet is more attractive, and certainly the best place in the house to stand is on the hot tiles in front of the gas log fireplace. I have to fight for space there with the cat, who sorta takes over the spot for a few months at a time :)

Dirt. I also like pine needles. They make a nice natural carpet. I like the woods in the spring when the tree sap is flowing. It makes the dirt stuck to your feet and smells very natural.

I've a section of moss growing on some concrete at the moment. It rarely see much sunlight and is rather damp mostly from rain and some good moss is growing. :) always fun to step on.

Leather soles are my favourite surface to walk barefoot on, with a fine layer of cotton in between

For me it's nice cool mud. It feels so soothing on the soles especially after walking around on hot asphalt.

Gravel is good for toughen bare soles, right. I like it, but I prefer asphalt or, in medieval towns, cubblestone pavement.
