BraveSirRubin, extremeism is very relative. Extremeism is women wearing pants and no hat in our country, compared to how oppressed they are in the middle east. Embracing extremeism isn't nessecarilly stupid, it just shows that you beleive strongly in something. Just because it is extreme now, doesn't mean it will be in 20 years.
I was curious so I looked it up on google for the "real" definition... people have different ideas of extreme too...its all relative...
I think the word "hippie" in today's context is just a label. Over the years, the collective mix of real personalities that originally defined the hippie lifestyle have been overlooked when trying to define what a hippie is. There's a good chance that this kind of personality can be found today, but I get the impression that some, if not most, of these people don't consider themselves hippies. Basically, the word "hippie" has been linked to a stereotype. It's like trying to define "wood" as merely a fuel source and a building material. Wood can be better described and understood when we include the entire context of what it is, starting with the original living source of it -- trees.
That's good... I thought I actually disagreed with you on something... THAT would have been a shocker, sir!
what confuses me is this..... any one of these people can get called a hippie but they are o so different. 1. someone who dresses in tie dye and no shoes and drives a colofully painted volkswagon and does peace protests and loves alot. they enjoy taking psycadelics and marajuana and generally being cooooool mannnnnn. 2. someone who is enviro-friendly and shops at organic produce shops and wears clothes made out of hemp etc. they like having conversations about the best eviro- friendly petrol to use in their enviro- friendly car. they often smoke marijuana to escape the pollution of this world. as for me... i wear baggy, drabby clothing (often tie dye or colorful). i do make alot of things out of hemp. i enjoy smoking pot.... alot. and ive only tried acid once. i love alot of people and things. and i love life. i drive a spraypainted vw kombi. with a bed in the back to sleep at the beach. there is a big difference between these two. the name "hippie" is just a steriotype name for them. or any other thing along these lines. im sorry if anything in my post sound offensive as i wasnt ment to come out that way. but my point is that if you think your a hippie, then chances are you are a hippie. its just a word from the 60's that carried on through with all the awesome onliving hippies from those way out days. great thread. peace
You're a hippie if you feel yourself like hippie. That's all u need! You don't have to keep rules, tis is the general advantage over civils! Peace!
hippies are carefree, open minded, loving, spiritual people. appearance or clothing has nothing to do with it. you shouldn't feel the need to "try" to look like a hippie.
I know this girl who thinks she is a hippie. For her its about following the dave matthews band around and hooking up. Oh and smoking pot and being "cool" although she really isnt...
It's how you act and react that makes you a hippy. Not how you dress, what you smoke, or who you know. Be yourself, that's all that counts.
Well, that is because being a hippie is (or at least in idea and ideal) a lifestyle/culture... Not a "scene". Doing certain things, wearing certain clothes, all this is a "scene" thing. Take punk for example. It carries a lot of attitude and stuff, and even attitude about revolution. However, their common bond is pretty much limited to rebelious music and clothing. Their politics vary grately (johnny ramone was very against drug use and was completely conservative. Joey Ramone was a complete left-wing liberal. And Dee-dee ramone died of a heroin overdose, and was very into drugs. This just gives example of diversity within ONE band). Compare this to hippies: A liberal movement, and all working towards peace. The music transcends over one genre, one clothing style, all that stuff. My take, anyway.
