Ha....my hair stylest did that to me once. He was always telling me to do certain things to it, but instead I would do my own 'weird' sort of thing with color and cut and all....one day I came in for a cut and told him exactly what to do and instead he did this little layering number so it would be 'full and bouncy'. ....... he was so happy about it too...it was very 'chic'.....haha.

Don't ya' hate that, Elle? I've been getting the "Why don't you cut your hair differently" deal most of my life...and I'm in my 40's....I like the way I wear my hair, and it often doesn't look "status quo"...but I want to get it trimmed up sometimes by a professional...I have a little gray in my hair too, and now they are telling me to get color in it to cover that up...AND I DON'T WANT TO! I've earned every one of those gray babies, and I'm proud of 'em!! So, I'll go back to looking the way I'm most comfortable very soon....yeehaww!!

my mom keeps telling me to comb my hair. she's starting to get real pissy about it. I don't want to comb my hair, and therefore i shouldn't have to. plus, i'm getting braces. i don't so much want the braces. but, if i have to have them i think it's only fair that i should be able to do whatever i so desire with my locks. I mean really, who is going to be hurt if i get dreads? well, according to her, me. no one will like me, i'll have no friends, my teachers will all fail me, i'll never get a job, etc.....

My parents are both hippies and accept the way I dress... It's just the piercings and tattoos that they don't understand. :)

my loved ones dont mind how I look because I dress neatly, smartly in colours and patterns that match. In dont blame any of your parents if they dont like the way you dress, I wouldnt like to see my child dress up like a circus clown either. People who see you walking down the street in stained, patched rainbow pants are not thinking 'wow, what a free thinking rebel' they are thinking 'oh my god that person has no idea how to dress themselves'
Individual clothes are great, but specifically mashing them all up higgledy piggley on purpose seems a bit silly to me.
And the person who said they never have showers coz its a waste of time and water, your just spreading disease and germs around, so really arent helping to save the world in that respect.

Harm none, but do as ye will. These words seem pretty harmful to me and harsh. I didn't think it was part of Wicca to be so judgemental and belittling of others. If you don't like hippie or patchie or rainbow clothes, don't wear them. But let's not be so harsh on those of us who do.

Those words were in no way harsh. It was an opinion. This is a free speech site..... remember?

Well I have long hair down past my shoulders Like David Gilmours length and I'm still growing it but surprising none of my relatives are that bothered except for my Mumk and that's because she's a hair dresser. She doesn't want me to cut it she just wants me to have cleaner hair without split ends etc.
I was surprised when my Grandparents didn't say much because you would expect them to be into old ideals and that Boys have short hair and Girls have long hair but I think they like me being individual and my self.

My mum cares, but she won't tell me so I can express myself. I think she's read a few too many hippy parenting books, for example she loathes my ear stretchers but only mentioned it once, when I got them, then realised I liked them and would keep them so she never mentioned it again. So I'm not sure what she thinks of me now, I've been warned against any tattoos or face piercings by both parents, I'm gonna get in trouble if I pierce my ears more (8 in my ears altogether, not too bad considering some people!)...

My brother already had dreads when I got them, so he'd gone through all the crap, everyones happier about it cause I hated normal hair and often just wouldn't brush it (uck), also my dreads are pretty primo and kept well, my brothers aren't, so behind my back I'm used as an example of how he should look, which I hate. My clothes are gothic/hippy, I'm called gothichippy by some friends, but the result is some nights I look completely goth and some nights completely hippy. Everyone around me is happy because I'm their weird, coo friend that they show off to people we don't know ("Look at me, I'm accepting and part of a minority because of this girl!"). It's quite odd.

My boyfriends mother is the worst, she doesn't seem to have a high opinion of me so rather than talking to me about it face to face, she tells my boyfriend horror stories about spiders nesting in dreads and how unsanitary I am and how I'm corrupting his dress sense for the worse. But this is the woman who told us that a boy with ear length hair would be called a freak and never accepted at UNIVERSITY (the place of all randomness/diversity over here), so we've just stopped listening.

it sounds to me like ur mom pays no attention to the "never judge a book by its cover," qoute. thats an insult saying "most people who have dreadlocks do drugs"! that infuriates me!

If I wear something that my mom does not like she usually tells me "you look like a parrot", or "why can't you dress more like your friend." She does not like that I shop at thrift stores and dress the way that I do, but hey things could alawys be much worse.

I have a style of my own and my parents have always pretty much respected that, unless I was really depressed and wore a lot of black a lot of days in a row. I have thick hair that gets oily a lot and oily skin, so if I don't shower every day, I have to watch out or I'll get... "critiqued" on it. I even have my own critiques though, for example the massive amount of t-shirts I acquired as a teen don't go well with office attire for work and college. After I went to a vocational business school, my fashion sense totally turned around. I'm annoyed at the short hairstyle I used to have because now that I'm growing it long, I have lots of flyaway strands and I want my hair to be both long and low-maintenence. I guess like everyone, I have my good days and my bad days.

My dad doesn't say much about my dreaded hair, but I get a lot of rolling of the eyes when I walk out of the door. Between the loads of jewelry, the dreaded hair, the bellbottom pants, the flowy shirts...I think he thinks I'm nuts. My grandma hasn't seen my hair yet because she lives in Florida most of the year, but my sister told her what I did to it and all she said was "but she had such beautiful hair"...ahk it's just hair! When I got my nose pierced two summers ago, my dad simply told me I didn't really need another hole in my head.

When I first met my significant other's parents...I was really nervous about them judging me, but his mother took to me instantly and often compliments me on my hair and clothes. I heard her on the phone one day saying what a beautiful girl I was...talk about blushing! She even bought me a couple of beads for my hair!

I have come to the conclusion long ago that as long as I'm happy with myself, then others can only be happy in return.
