Hmmm... Free country and all I figured that allowing my hair and beard to be grown long was a personal choice and I was allowed to do that. Now I find out from you that it means I am a criminal and deserve to have my car pulled over for no reason other than how I look and that this is a good tool for police. Wait! I thought this was a FREE COUNTRY. As far as you not looking like those that break the law, what you mean is you don't look like those that get profiled... I am sure there are many that look just like you that do break the law.
If you fit the description of someone who would violate the law often then yes you will be profiled. A lot of arrests are made from profiling, without then you might see more crime. Yes you can look however you want but be prepared to deal with something that might come with it. If I was to venture into a low income area where drugs are being sold then based on profiling I should be pulled over as my only reason to be there is to buy drugs. Some profiling is bad and needs to be addressed. I am sure many people who look like me have and will commit crimes, but you people with a certain look in certain areas that will fit exactly what the criminal element looks like. Yes this is a free country, but we have laws to help keep this country free.
In every encounter I had with them they behaved correctly. Can't say I didn't deserved the fine when i got one. Compare the traffic situation in certain big asian cities to that of your own. Where would you rather drive your nice car? It is all relative. I'm sure some are pricks and not handling things fair and the way they are supposed to. But that is because they are primarily human, not necessarily because they are law officers.
I've never had a problem with the police but I'm a nice, innocent looking white girl - I recognize my privilege. I've seen plenty of guys, both white and black, harrassed by cops because they didn't look like the police assume model citizens should look.
of course i've been harrassed and threatened - and then i have to make'm cry . use your power . the reality is anarchy . abolish punishment , too .
I think that cops will be who they want to be unless they are on some crazed force like NYPD where they are driven by big money. Cops in more relaxed areas will probably let their true nature come through. If a person wants to be a hard-ass they will be. If they want to be helpful and conscientious they will be.
The police have always been careful with me, never mistreated me, but I honestly think they think that I'm nuts. However I absolutely know that at times excessive or unreasonable force is used. Also they enforce too many inappropriate laws, like the drug laws and especially arresting people for Marijuana, but people should not be arrested from a few Xanax or Oxycodone either. Don't trust the police, never have and never will while they are still locking up people for Marijuana.
i think the police are necessary of course. i also think sometimes they abuse their power. not all police departments are the same, some are more corrupt than others, and in different ways. the drug laws are not really an issue with the police. the police simply must enforce whatever laws that exist, at least that's how it should be. the police should not have any discretion over which laws are, or are not enforced. the whole system though, is corrupt to the very core.
I have had at least 3 encounters with the law where the officers were abusive and on one occasion drunk. That's a few years ago now, but I know of others who've experienced rough justice. The trouble with bent coppers is that have a lot of potential to do people real damage. People do get framed, sometimes for quite serious crimes. Probably most police are fairly honest, but it only takes one or two bad apples.......
I personally think that we are meant to live in a world where law and police are not necessary. If every person does their own thing, walks on their own path without hurting others around him, and everybody lived up to their true potential to be good, and be the best humans they can be, we could live in a paradise where no one would kill, no one would be taken their freedom away, and no laws would be needed, cause we would all be at peace with one another.
