I think its obvious that trees sit around and think about what humans think about.

I'm pretty sure that they don't have brains...then again I'm no botanist.

I would think if they can actually form thoughts they would be:

grow more leaves and branches here, there's more sun here

 

I think the way they look more and more like insects is because the ones that look most insect-like survive and reproduce while the less convincing ones don't.
