Like the majority of the people polled, I have brown (well, it is very dark brown) hair. I am of English and Irish descent and exhibit the same common dark brown shade that many people from the British Isles share (especially the Welsh, Cornish, and Irish).

Dark chestnut brown or dark mahogany brown (it changed a little inbetween these 2 colors when I was a little girl).

Now: Black-brown (off black or Midnight brown they used to call it or darkest brown; darkest shade of brown right under black).

I have done a bit of research into this query (Why are a good amount of Brits/Irish dark featured?), and found a lot of fascinating information.

Apparently, the reason is that before the last ice age ended, Ireland and England were connected by land to France, which, of course, is only one border away from Spain. The first people in Europe (say 25K years ago), were all dark featured Caucasoid types (picture your modern Spaniard/Portuguese person). But, over thousands of years of invasions from the Blonde-people of the East (from Russia/Ukraine/Baltic Area) and through Germany (Anglo-Saxons), some of the original darkness of the Brits was "washed out." That is why the darkest people are found in the western-most points of the British Isles: that is simply because the invaders didn't make it all of the way.

So, now-a-days, there is a mix of the new-school blonder, "Nordic" Brits with the old-school "Atlantic-Mediterranean" Brits (who are blood-brothers with the Spaniards, and, like you pointed out, the Basques). One thing to note, however, is that the Atlantic-Med Brits/Irish DID lose, by majority, their dark skin, due to adaptations over 25K years of living in a cloudy low UV-ray environment. So, dark skin is still rare, but not unheard of, in the British Isles.

I would say that my skin color is about as dark as a natural, not-mixed, Brit would have. It is not pinkish like German/Baltic people, but not olive like Southern Med. people. It is cream-colored and tans extremely well without burning. But, that is rare from what I gather.

excellent post. i have read much of what you have, there are a few conflicting arguments however - nothing, regarding british heritage, is clear cut.

^That's interesting. My ancestry is mainly Swedish, but my mom and sister have dark skin and brown eyes. Really the only explanation is that some our ancesters were french speaking walloons from Belgium who emigrated north in the 1600's.

i too, have olive skin and dark hair/eyes - i think, if not basque, my family heritage may indicate i am of possible italian / maltese decent. both groups migrated to south wales at the beginning of the 19th century.

You could always get a DNA test. I've seriously been thinking about it.

Yeah. I have done ancestry research back to the 1600s and ~50% is Irish (mainly the NW Coast), ~50% English (mainly Cornish, but also some ancestry from the English East Coast), but there is also a tiny bit of Baden ancestry (like 1/32). That is in SW Germany. I have always figured that is why I have hazel eyes. My dark brown- blackish brown hair is common in the areas of The British Isles I mentioned (like I explained), my "in-between" olive/white skin makes sense, but my darker eye color is really unusual for Ireland (they have something like 85% Blue eyes). Although...Cornwall is known (like Wales), to have some pockets of dark eyes. Who knows!?

I find the dark features of the British Isles to be FASCINATING. It is cool to meet some more "dark-Brits". People have thought I was Greek, Italian, French, and some have got it correct (usually Wales is what they say). In the dead of winter, my hair is darker (from not being in the sun), but my skin is not as dark (no sun, again), so I really look like a typified dark Brit. But in the summer, I tan so darkly that it confuses people.

As for dark Swedish features, it is very much possible that you have Walloon ancestry. The Swedes generally have either dusky blonde or light-brown hair with almost exclusive light eyes (blue or green). I have read some good studies on the pigmentation percentages throughout Europe. I'll try to post some in a little while.

The darkest (skin color) people in Europe are [tied between] the Portuguese, Sicilian, and Romanian (which I thought was interesting!). Hair color-wise, I think the SE Europeans win (like Bulgaria), and for eyes, I think the Iberian Peninsula is the darkest.

Born blonde. Light brown now. I picked blonde because there was no 'light brown' option.

My ex used to call it dirty dishwater blonde..

A few silver hairs are sneaking in now.

You really have to look hard to see 'em tho.
