Heh, I've got a hippie friend who worked as a MP with the NSA...got pulled over for drinking and driving once, and the police found an SKS, an AR-15 /w grenade launcher, and a couple grenades in his backseat.

Hippies are teh deadliest of all in the US; glad I was a stoner in high school!

One more day, Matt have u decided yet.
I have to agree with Spuff on this one. Are u going brand name cos of warrenty. Lemme tell you something about warrenties...they easily revoke them.

For example, their warrenties specify that if u have any 3rd party p2p software on your machine then the warrenty is void. Do u like to use Ares or emule... If u ever have to take your computer to be serviced for hardware issues, even if it's totally unrelated to software, if they find bearshare, etc. than they'll make u pay for parts and labour cos your warrenty is void. I even know someone who's reluctant to install firefox cos of warrenty issues, WTF.

How much is that Gateway gonna cost u. I bet u can build one just like it for half the price.

Google is your friend. Here's some links u may find helpful
    http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm
    and another one
    http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/learntobuild.html

    enjoy :)

If you install Ares on your machine you might as well void the warranty...spyware, ugh.

I went with the Gateway. I could ONLY buy off the shelf from one store or another due to financial reasons. I got the one with the fastest processor, and System Recovery cd's. (Just in case!)

Yes. THOSE are important to KEEP, and keep them SAFE!!!!!!!! That way if anything goes wrong, and your system crashes, you're covered!
Just pop them in the CD drive, and bang. Just like when it was NEW. Of course you have to re-install all your other software again. But that beats having a $500-$3000 doorstop!

The only thing you should consider for 'brand' is what kinda waranty and price they'll give ya.

Really you should be looking into component.

I'd say look into a gig of ram... it'll do the trick, make sure you stick with a p4 or athlon and not a knock off like duron.

I'd say go for a 10,000 rpm drive too... but that depends what you're looking for.

@Lodui: Exactly how do you consider AMD a "knock-off?" Each chip has it's pros and cons...that's like saying all rap music sucks...err, no, like saying all polka sucks. ;)

@Spliff: I already own every copy of Windows, including those that won't be released for the next year or so. Though I have heard a few rumors that Longhorn's going to be a (gasp) subscription-based service...

if you want a top game machine AMD 3200 thru 3500 are to choice with out costing an arm and a leg . with intel you should have at least 2.66 Ghz no less. ill wait a good while after a new os is out i dont want deal with bugs.

First off, I love rap, secondly, I said Duron and celeron suck, I got an athlon XP 2500, personally, I prefer AMD over Intel. :H

a fast intel performs or even out perform the lowed AMD chips A AMD 2500 is not exactly stellar compare to faster intel .. now if you had AMD and it was 3000 thru 3500+ then i would agree with you.. no one half serius would consider Duron or celeron . the pentium 4= 2.66 ghz thru 3.00 well do anything fast. and are fairly cheap. AMD 3000 thru 3500+ are best for games . of course you could go above 3500+ but things starts to get expensive here and im talking about building one not one built allready. in general AMD64 is better . clock speed alone dont make it better but they are a few things that the faster intel pentium 4 do faster than AMD .

Longhorn is also gonna be a *nix, or so they say. Is Microsoft moving towards the bright side? Or is it a trap?

AMD just plain rules. It's more stable, reliable and hackable.
